Buying a motorcycle from Howell Powersports in Howell, Michigan? Follow this checklist before you commit.
Verify the title and VIN
Check the VIN on the frame, engine, and title to confirm they match. Run the VIN through a motorcycle history report. Howell Powersports should be able to provide documentation for any bike in their inventory.
Check the fork seals and bearings
Look for oil weeping down the fork tubes — a sign the seals need replacement. Grab the front wheel and push/pull firmly to check for play in the steering head bearings.
Inspect the chain and sprockets
A worn chain will have excess slack and the sprocket teeth will look hooked or pointed instead of rounded. Chain and sprocket replacement runs $200–$500. Factor that into your offer if it's needed.
Check tire age and tread depth
Look for the DOT date code on the sidewall — tires over five years old should be replaced regardless of tread. Tires are a safety item, not a cosmetic one.
Take a test ride
Confirm the clutch engages smoothly, the brakes feel firm, and the bike tracks straight at speed. Listen for valve noise, exhaust leaks, or electrical issues. A short test ride catches problems a visual inspection misses.

Went to look at a bike here today and possibly finance one did the math on the website and said I could do it for what I wanted but when I got there the main guy I think his names Justin basically called me and my buddy stupid for trying to finance the bike we wanted and before we left he asked what ccs were we looking for we wanted 150ccs and Justin fat shamed us saying I need something bigger cause you are in the 300lbs club. Absolutely terrible customer service
I bought a 2024 z900 from this dealer. I had a very pleasant experience with the salesman. As a female rider, it’s sometimes hard to find someone in the motorcycle community that treats you like a person. The staff were very friendly. However, my z900 is with 5 miles on it died two miles down the road. After investigating we found out the battery couldn’t take or hold a charge. I find it silly that I had to buy a new battery my first day of owning the bike, especially after they told me they gave it a full inspection and spent about an hour “getting it ready”. Also they gave me a 2025 manual with the bike, which is basically a completely different machine than the 2024. Just seems a bit dysfunctional, but overall a good dealership.
I called Howell Power Sports and asked how much it would be to bring in my 1994 Quadrunner to have them diagnose a front differential oil leak and a starter issue. They told me $129.00 was the cost for a diagnostic check of the machine. I brought the machine in and had it written up with the "check and advise" for these two issues for $129.00. They called me a few days later and told me my starter was bad and that the oil leak was coming from the torn CV boots on the front end. $400-$500 for starter fix and over $1000 for CV boot replacement. I advised no thank you, too much money for a 1994 machine. I went back in to pick up my machine and spoke to the mechanic. He showed me where he believed the oil was coming from, which was from the torn CV boots. I told him the CV boots do not hold oil, they hold grease. There is no oil that can leak from there. I told them at check in, we believed the oil was leaking from the front differential reservoir which holds the gear oil. It was leaking oil, now the reservoir is empty and it stopped leaking oil. Doesn't take a genius to realize that it stopped leaking because there is no more oil in it to leak. He told me he never even put oil in the front differential to run it and test for a leak. He simply saw the boots torn and believed it was coming from there. The machine was still taken apart at this point. He said I could take the machine now as is or wait to pick it after after he puts it back together. I advised I would come back the next morning after it was put back together. The next morning I go back to pick up the machine and the guy in the store tells me the total is $258.00. I questioned why $258 and not the $129 I was quoted. He told me that it took the mechanic an hour to put the machine back together for me and it is $129.00 per hour for labor. If I took the machine yesterday as it was it "would have saved me an hour of labor". After a bit of bickering back and forth, I eventually paid the $258 and walked away with my machine knowing I would never step foot in that place again. I paid $258 to drop off my machine, only to find out NOTHING I didn't already know. Why on earth would a store charge you more money to put a machine back in its original state that it was dropped off at blows my mind. Everyone I have spoken to about this can not believe I was charged an extra $129 of labor to put my machine back together after they dismantled it to diagnose it. That should be taken into account on the original check and advised work order for $129. This place is a rip-off. The mechanic didn't even check the front differential to put in oil to check for a leak. The store double charges for work that should be included in the original work order. The main guy was rude and short when I questioned him about the overcharge. Do not bring your business to Howell Power Sports!! They do not care about the customer at all. They only care about gouging you for all the money they can.
Don't trust this dealer, bought a kids snowmobile from them and was told it was perfect and ready to ride - definitely not the case the wrong track was on the machine. Extremely rude management, go to C and C sports or a different cat dealer unless you like wasting your money and being talked down to. 2 star dealer for a reason.
Bought a SSR 250 from here. Jim was great to work with. Made the whole deal super easy.
