Question 1

What is the average cost of a pontoon boat?

Accepted Answer

New pontoon boats typically range from $20,000 for basic 18–20 ft models up to $80,000 or more for high-end tri-toons with performance engines and luxury amenities. Used pontoons from 5–10 years old often sell for $10,000–$35,000 depending on condition and features.

Question 2

What size pontoon do I need?

Accepted Answer

For a family of 4–6, a 22–24 ft pontoon is the sweet spot — enough room to move around without being difficult to dock. If you plan to host larger groups or want more performance, a 24–28 ft tri-toon with a higher-horsepower engine gives you more deck space and better handling in light chop.

Question 3

Are pontoon boats good for fishing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many pontoon manufacturers offer dedicated fishing configurations with livewells, rod holders, trolling motor mounts, and casting decks. Fishing pontoons work best on calm inland lakes and slow rivers where their shallow draft is an advantage.

Question 4

What engine is best for a pontoon boat?

Accepted Answer

A 90–115 hp outboard is sufficient for most 20–22 ft pontoons used for casual cruising. For a 24+ ft tri-toon or if you plan to pull skiers and tubers, a 150–300 hp motor provides better speed and lift. Triple-tube pontoons perform significantly better at higher horsepower.

Question 5

How do I store a pontoon boat?

Accepted Answer

Pontoons are typically stored on trailers, in covered dry storage, or on a boat lift at a dock. Their flat profile makes them easy to trailer but they require a longer trailer than V-hull boats of similar length. Dry storage is preferred in northern climates to prevent freeze damage.
