Question 1

What type of fishing boat is best for bass fishing?

Accepted Answer

Dedicated bass boats are the top choice for competitive and serious freshwater bass fishing. They sit low in the water with a large casting deck at bow and stern, a powerful trolling motor, and multiple livewells. Ranger, Skeeter, Nitro, and Basscat are leading bass boat brands. For casual bass fishing, an aluminum jon boat or small mod-V hull works well at lower cost.

Question 2

What size fishing boat do I need for ocean fishing?

Accepted Answer

For nearshore fishing (within 10–20 miles offshore), a 20–25 ft center console or walkaround with a single or twin 150–200 hp outboard is appropriate in calm conditions. For true offshore bluewater fishing — canyons, banks, blue water — you want at least a 28–32 ft boat with 2–4 large outboards and enough range, storage, and stability for multi-day trips.

Question 3

How much does a good fishing boat cost?

Accepted Answer

Entry-level aluminum fishing boats start under $15,000 new. A quality fiberglass bay or bass boat runs $25,000–$60,000. Walkaround cabin boats for nearshore use typically cost $50,000–$120,000. Full offshore sportfishing boats from 35–50 ft can reach $300,000–$1,000,000+. Used boats cut these figures significantly.

Question 4

Should I buy an aluminum or fiberglass fishing boat?

Accepted Answer

Aluminum boats are lighter, more durable in rocky rivers and lakes, and easier to maintain. They're ideal for freshwater use and modest inshore use. Fiberglass offers a smoother ride in choppy water, better fuel efficiency at speed, and a more refined appearance — preferred for saltwater fishing and nearshore use. Fiberglass costs more upfront but holds resale value better.

Question 5

Do fishing boats need special equipment?

Accepted Answer

The essentials are a GPS/chartplotter with sonar (fish finder), a VHF marine radio, navigation lights, a life jacket for every person aboard, and a throwable flotation device. For offshore use, add an EPIRB or PLB, flares, and a first aid kit. An electric trolling motor is standard on bass boats and useful on most freshwater fishing rigs.
