Question 1

How do I register a boat in Florida?

Accepted Answer

You must register your vessel with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) within 30 days of purchase. Registration is done through a county tax collector's office or online at myfwc.com. You'll need a bill of sale and, for titled vessels, the certificate of title. Registration is valid for 1 or 2 years and must be renewed before expiration.

Question 2

Does Florida require a boating license?

Accepted Answer

Florida requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 to pass an approved boating safety course and carry proof of completion when operating a motorized vessel. The course can be completed online or in person. The Florida Safe Boating Course is offered by the FWC and various U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary chapters.

Question 3

What are boat registration fees in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Florida boat registration fees range from approximately $50 for vessels under 16 feet to $225 or more for larger boats over 40 feet. Fees vary by vessel length class. Registration must be renewed annually or biennially through your county tax collector.

Question 4

What are the best boat storage options in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Florida offers dry stack storage (the most popular option for protection from sun and humidity), wet slips at marinas, and traditional trailer storage. Dry storage is ideal for saltwater areas where antifouling bottom paint can be avoided. Many boat owners in coastal areas use dry stacks to prevent marine growth and corrosion between uses.

Question 5

Is boat insurance required in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Florida does not legally require boat insurance for most recreational vessels. However, lenders will require it if you're financing, and marinas often require liability coverage for slip rentals. Given Florida's hurricane risk and busy boating waters, liability and comprehensive coverage is strongly recommended.

Question 6

What should I know about saltwater vs. freshwater boats in Florida?

Accepted Answer

Saltwater boats are built with marine-grade aluminum, stainless steel hardware, and anti-corrosion coatings to handle ocean spray and salt exposure. Freshwater boats like bass boats and pontoons are lighter and less expensive but corrode quickly in salt environments. If you plan to boat in both, look for center consoles or bay boats designed for light saltwater use but versatile enough for lakes.

Question 7

How does boat title transfer work in Florida?

Accepted Answer

For titled vessels in Florida, the seller must sign the back of the title and provide it to the buyer along with a bill of sale. The buyer then takes the signed title to the county tax collector to transfer ownership and receive new registration. If buying from a dealer, the dealer handles the title paperwork. For non-titled vessels (typically older or smaller boats), only a bill of sale is required.
