For family trail rides, look at the Can-Am Commander MAX or Kawasaki Teryx4. For speed, compare the Can-Am Maverick X3 MAX, Honda Talon 1000X-4 and Kawasaki Teryx KRX4 1000.

Starting prices are the manufacturers' published base or starting MSRPs, read on 14 October 2026. They exclude taxes and dealer fees. Polaris, Honda and Yamaha list a destination charge on top, and Can-Am says transport and preparation are not included. Ask every dealer for an out-the-door price.

How these 4-seat side-by-sides were chosen

These picks come from published manufacturer data, not test drives. Every model here seats at least four people, and each price, seat count and specification was read from the manufacturer's own website on 14 October 2026.

The models are grouped by the job the back seat does: carrying a work crew, switching between people and cargo, family trail riding, and sport riding. Within each group, the comparison uses figures a shopper can check before visiting a dealer: seats, starting price, bed or box capacity, towing capacity and width. Model years are the ones each manufacturer shows on its page that day, which is why a few 2025 and 2026 models appear next to 2027 models.

Horsepower is quoted only where the manufacturer publishes it. Honda and Kawasaki do not list horsepower for these models on their pages, so power is not compared across brands.

Best six-seat side-by-sides for a work crew

The Can-Am Defender MAX is the lowest-priced six-seat side-by-side in this guide, and the Honda Pioneer 1000-6 Deluxe Crew is the six-seater to look at if you want an automatic dual-clutch transmission. Both carry six people and still have a full work bed.

  • Can-Am Defender MAX (2027): starts at $15,399 with a 52 hp, 650 cc single-cylinder engine. Can-Am lists six seats, a 1,000 lb cargo box (600 lb in California), 2,500 lb towing and a 63.5-inch width.
  • Can-Am Defender MAX XT HD10/HD11 (2027): starts at $21,899 and moves to the newer Defender platform with an 80 hp (HD10) or 95 hp (HD11) three-cylinder engine. Box and towing figures are the same as the Defender MAX, and the width is 65 inches.
  • Honda Pioneer 1000-6 Deluxe Crew (2025): $22,199 plus a $1,395 destination charge. Honda lists a 999 cc twin, a fully automatic DCT, six seats with a staggered rear-center seat, a 1,000 lb bed (600 lb for California models), 2,500 lb towing and a 63.0-inch width.
  • Yamaha Viking VI EPS (2025): $16,599 plus a $1,300 destination charge, with a 686 cc engine, six seats and a 61.8-inch width.
  • Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000 Texas Edition (2027): $24,699 plus a $1,295 destination charge. Polaris also makes six-seat Ranger Crew 1000 and Ranger Crew XP 1000 models, but the Ranger 1000 and Ranger XP 1000 pages show one headline starting price for each line, so choose the seating option on the Polaris site or ask a dealer for the Crew price.

Best convertible seating: cargo one day, crew the next

Honda's QuickFlip seats and Kawasaki's Trans Cab system suit buyers who carry a full crew only some of the time, because the extra seats fold away when you need the cargo space. The trade-off is that the bed shrinks, or disappears, while the extra seats are in use.

Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT 1000 LE

The 2027 Mule PRO-FXT 1000 LE has a base MSRP of $18,899 and converts from three seats to six. Kawasaki says the change takes one person, one trip and about one minute, with no tools. Kawasaki's Mule lineup page lists cargo capacity of 999 lb with three seats and 350 lb with six (348 lb for California models), and towing of 2,000 lb.

Honda Pioneer 700-4 and Pioneer 1000-5

Honda's QuickFlip seats sit in the bed and fold flat when not in use. On the 2027 Pioneer 700-4 ($14,399 plus $1,185 destination), Honda describes a 2-person mode with the rear seats laid flat in the bed, a 3-person mode and a 4-person mode. Honda lists a 675 cc single-cylinder engine, a 1,000 lb bed, 1,500 lb towing and a 59.9-inch width.

The 2026 Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe ($22,399 plus $1,295 destination) adds QuickFlip seats in the bed for five seats in total. Honda lists a 999 cc twin with an automatic DCT, a 1,000 lb bed for 49-state models (600 lb in California), 2,500 lb towing and a 64.0-inch width.

Best 4-seaters for family trail riding

The Can-Am Commander MAX XT and the Kawasaki Teryx4 are the recreation 4-seaters in this guide: built more for trail comfort than for hauling, but with a cargo box for gear.

  • Can-Am Commander MAX XT (2027): starts at $21,999 with a 100 hp, 976 cc V-twin. Can-Am lists four seats, a 600 lb dumping cargo box, 2,000 lb towing, a 1,280 lb payload capacity, 13 inches of ground clearance and a 64-inch width.
  • Kawasaki Teryx4 (2025): base MSRP $16,199, with a 783 cc V-twin, four seats with stadium-style seating, FOX Podium 2.0 piggyback shocks and Kawasaki's 3-year limited warranty. The Teryx4 S versions start at $16,799 and add longer-travel suspension (10.7 inches front, 10.0 inches rear).
  • Polaris General XP 4 1000: Polaris offers the General XP 1000 with 2 or 4 seats. The line starts at $22,999 and has a 100 hp engine, a 600 lb dumping cargo box and a 64-inch width. Polaris's page shows one headline starting price for the line, so choose the seating option on its site or ask a dealer for the 4-seat price.

For a closer look at these two lines, see Polaris General vs Can-Am Commander.

Best 4-seat sport side-by-sides

The Can-Am Maverick Sport MAX X is the lowest-priced sport 4-seater in this guide, and the Maverick X3 MAX, Honda Talon 1000X-4 and Kawasaki Teryx KRX4 1000 TR are the next steps up. All four are 64 inches wide in the versions listed here.

Model and yearStarting priceEngineWidth
Can-Am Maverick Sport MAX X (2027)$21,499100 hp, 976 cc V-twin64 in.
Can-Am Maverick X3 MAX DS (2027)$22,999135 or 200 hp by version, 900 cc turbo triple64 in.
Honda Talon 1000X-4 (2026)$23,099999 cc twin, six-speed DCT64 in.
Kawasaki Teryx KRX4 1000 TR (2027)$24,199999 cc parallel twin64 in.

Can-Am lists a 300 lb cargo box and 1,500 lb towing for the Maverick Sport MAX X, and Honda lists a 297 lb bed for the Talon 1000X-4. Honda's Talon 1000X-4 adds a $1,370 destination charge, and Honda says its rear stadium seats sit nearly three inches higher than the front seats so rear passengers can see ahead. The Maverick X3 MAX RS is 72.4 inches wide, and Kawasaki's standard Teryx KRX4 1000 starts at $25,199.

Polaris builds 4-seat versions of the RZR XP, RZR XP S, RZR Pro XP, RZR Pro S, RZR Pro R and RZR Pro R Boost. Its RZR lineup page shows one starting price for each line, from $19,999 for the RZR XP, so ask a dealer what the 4-seat version costs. For 2-seat sport picks sorted by trail width, see Best sport UTVs.

What the second row changes: length and price

Adding a second row makes a side-by-side much longer and adds a few thousand dollars, while box and towing figures often stay the same. Can-Am publishes both versions of several models, which makes a like-for-like comparison possible.

Can-Am model (2027)LengthStarting priceBox / towing
Defender, 3 seats121 in.$12,9991,000 / 2,500 lb
Defender MAX, 6 seats153.4 in.$15,3991,000 / 2,500 lb
Maverick Sport X, 2 seats122 in.$18,499300 / 1,500 lb
Maverick Sport MAX X, 4 seats149 in.$21,499300 / 1,500 lb

Each pair uses the same engine: the 52 hp 650 cc single in the Defender pair and the 100 hp 976 cc V-twin in the Maverick Sport pair. In these two pairs the longer version costs $2,400 and $3,000 more and is 27 to 32 inches longer. Before you buy, measure your trailer, garage and any truck bed you plan to haul it in, because a 4-seater that fits your trails may not fit your trailer.

Which 4-seat side-by-side should you buy?

Start with what the back seat is for, then narrow by budget and width.

  • Work crew most days: a fixed six-seater such as the Can-Am Defender MAX or Honda Pioneer 1000-6 Deluxe Crew keeps the full bed and the extra seats at the same time.
  • Crew only some days: the Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT 1000 LE or a Honda Pioneer with QuickFlip seats lets you trade seats for bed space.
  • Family trail rides: the Can-Am Commander MAX XT or Kawasaki Teryx4.
  • Speed and suspension: the Can-Am Maverick Sport MAX or X3 MAX, Honda Talon 1000X-4 or Kawasaki Teryx KRX4 1000 TR.
  • Warranty: Kawasaki lists a 3-year limited warranty on the Teryx4 and Mule PRO-FXT 1000 LE. Honda, Can-Am and Polaris list a one-year factory warranty on the models above, and Yamaha lists six months plus a 10-year belt warranty on the Viking VI EPS.

Before you visit a dealer, check the width limit on the trails you ride and the length your trailer can carry. For more on choosing by job, read Best side-by-side for the money, Polaris Ranger vs Can-Am Defender and the Side-by-side UTV buyer's guide. To compare recall records, see Most reliable side-by-sides.

When you have a shortlist, see 4-seat and 6-seat side-by-sides for sale on Searchshop and ask each dealer for an out-the-door price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 4-seat side-by-side cost?

New 4-seat side-by-sides in this guide start at $14,399 for the 2027 Honda Pioneer 700-4 and run past $24,000 for sport models such as the Kawasaki Teryx KRX4 1000 TR. Those are base prices before destination charges, taxes and dealer fees; destination alone is $1,185 to $1,395 on the Honda models here.

Which side-by-sides seat six people?

Six-seat models in this guide include the Can-Am Defender MAX, Honda Pioneer 1000-6 Deluxe Crew, Yamaha Viking VI EPS, Polaris Ranger Crew models and the Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT 1000 LE in its six-seat mode. On the Mule, cargo capacity drops from 999 lb to 350 lb when all six seats are in use, so check the bed figure for the seating mode you plan to use.

Does a 4-seat side-by-side tow less than a 2-seat?

Not always. Can-Am lists the same 2,000 lb towing and 600 lb box for the Commander XT and Commander MAX XT, and the same 1,500 lb towing and 300 lb box for the Maverick Sport X and Maverick Sport MAX X. The bigger differences are length and price, so compare the exact versions you are considering.
