Boat Buyer's Guide – Tommy's - Walloon

Buying a boat from Tommy's - Walloon in Walloon Lake, Michigan? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.

  1. 1

Match the boat to your waters

Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Tommy's - Walloon which models suit the waterways near Walloon Lake, Michigan.

  2. 2

    Inspect the hull carefully

Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.

  3. 3

    Check engine hours

Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Tommy's - Walloon.

  4. 4

    Request a sea trial

Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Tommy's - Walloon will accommodate this request.

  5. 5

    Verify title and registration

Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Tommy's - Walloon should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

Love the location of this Marina most of all! I gave it 4 stars because the boats have been very upgraded and the cost has been passed along to those renting this year. My suggestion to the owner is most people renting a boat likely already have a boat and just don't want to trailer it and now the cost have gone up significantly that it's close to $1000 for 4 hours. As a renter we don't really need a top rated boat for 4 hours or even the day. The staff were great as most are the same staff. The business changed this year but all is mostly the same other than price and their newer boats. In my opinion, the boats they did have were newer and were great. I do wonder why the name change and it's the same owners and staff. Overall, we had a great time and love that we can explore on our own on another lake.

Have bought several boats from these guys over the last fifteen months. Always professional and accommodating for whatever we’ve needed. Even when we had some minor mechanical issues with our Tahoe tritoon, they were on-sight right away and even got us a loaner as the manufacturer worked on solving the issues. Could be happier with everyone there and plan on all of my future watercraft purchases to be from Legacy Water Sports.

Overall, the experience was okay. The staff were nice and boat was clean and new but the boat rental experience was not great. We ran into electrical issues where the fuel gauge, radio, trim gauge and other components did not work....this happened on the far end of the lake causing us to have to come all the way back. They offered to get us a portable radio and top us off (so we were not worried about running out of fuel) while we went in and resupplied / used the restroom but forgot to do both in the 30 minutes we were gone. They filled us up after that and again forgot to get us a blutooth speaker and we decided just got on the water instead of asking for the speaker to avoid further delays. Additionally, the tube they gave us deflated later in the day also causing us to come all the way back to dock, swap it and out and miss more time on the water. For $800+ a day this caused us to miss out on a couple hours of our trip and was frustrating. In the end they did provide us some financial compensation which made things better

Great place to rent a pontoon. Our family rented one and spent a wonderful afternoon on the lake. The staff was knowledgeable and courteous and explained the boat's functions. Even though our family is not seasoned boaters, the staff made it easy for us to navigate the boat around the lake. We're looking forward to renting again from Legacy next year!

The rental process and condition of the boat was great! The girl that signed me up charged me for a full day when we only rented the boat for half a day. Thankfully, I caught it and they corrected the bill
