Buying a boat from Tommy's - Grand Rapids in Comstock Park, Michigan? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Tommy's - Grand Rapids which models suit the waterways near Comstock Park, Michigan.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Tommy's - Grand Rapids.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Tommy's - Grand Rapids will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Tommy's - Grand Rapids should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

Where do I start??? First of all they sell the best brand boats with the best waves/wakes in the industry, Malibu and Axis. The sales people are honest, personable, and care about their customers. Their service department knows their products and are a dream to work with. I bought a 2017 T22 and had a bunch of RGB Lighting installed and they knocked it out of the park. They gave me a killer deal and installed everything with photo updates. Can't say enough good things about the Tommy's team.
Outstanding!! The Tommy’s team was fantastic! I didn’t buy their most expensive boat but they all made me feel like I did. Our sales guy Matt kept us updated on everything and made the buying process really easy and pressure free.
What a great experience buying a boat. Tommy’s way exceeded our expectations and all of the employees we worked with were AWESOME! Sonny made our purchase through phone and email smooth and easy. We knew they were taking good care of our boat until we could pick it up. Matt did a thorough walk through and answered all my husbands crazy questions. He made sure we were comfortable and familiar with all the features of our 21 VLX. The GM, Stacy made a point to come and introduce herself to us and the whole team made us feel welcome! Super excited for many great new memories with our new to us Malibu!
Just purchased a 2021 Axis T22 from a private seller in March. Tommy's handled the warranty transfer at that time. The first time we put the boat in the water in April we got a check engine light so we brought the boat back to Tommy's for service. The boat has now been at Tommy's for two weeks and every day I hear that a different part "might" be bad. I had been in communication with the same person. We finally determined which parts needed to be replaced and I was assured that the parts were in stock and the service would not take more than an hour or two. The only hangup was whether or not these parts would be included in the warranty from Axis. Despite the Axis handbook stating verbatim that these parts are covered, Tommy's still needed confirmation from an Axis rep. As of today I learned that no one has reached out to Axis (I reached out to them myself and they responded within hours), the parts are NOT in stock and haven't even been ordered, and the person I have been in communication with at Tommy's had his last day at Tommy's yesterday! So he's just gone? I can't believe what a circus this has been. It's honestly shocking that I'm being told that four parts need to be replaced when this boat had a fall service AND a warranty transfer with Tommy's and has not gone on the water since. Not to mention the boat has been with them two weeks and nothing has been done. So disappointed that Tommy's has been unable to replace parts and confirm warranty status. Do not recommend.
Toni, Sonny & the whole Tommy's GR team has been fantastic. We have nothing but amazing things to say about the experience. From walking in the shop and talking to all the staff to scheduling our boat delivery, we've been treated well. They spent a full day on the water teaching us all about our new Malibu and surfing. They've also been great with quick questions as we learn the details. We also had the boat up at Walloon for a couple weeks and were happy to get a dockside oil change to keep things running smooth. Keep up the great work Team Tommy's!
