Buying a boat from Smith Boys of Rochester in Rochester, New York? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Smith Boys of Rochester which models suit the waterways near Rochester, New York.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Smith Boys of Rochester.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Smith Boys of Rochester will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Smith Boys of Rochester should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

Just going to put this out there for a warning for anyone who is considering buying a boat. I highly recommend that you DO NOT purchase from Smith Boys. Dishonest business. Poor customer service. There is a reason that they only have a 2 star rating. Consider that fact if you are considering buying a new or used boat. Highly recommend holding tight to your wallet and going elsewhere.
I’ve bought two boats through Smith Boys, (as well as 4 surfboards and a wakeboard). They were great to deal with during the initial sales process, and have been great to deal with regarding ongoing service and storage needs. Prices have always been very competitive. Any issues I’ve encountered, they have been incredibly responsive and done great work. I highly recommend them!
The worst. It was the worst experience I have ever had with a boat or with any repair shop. Took my boat to Smith Boys because it was not running. They told me I needed a new carburetor and they replaced the carburetor. I paid them $1600 and the boat started I put my wife and daughter in the boat and they went a mile out and it died. I got them towed back in to land and I trailered the boat back to Smith Boys. They told me they do not know what the problem is and asked if I wanted to pay for a diagnosis. They were rude and would not help me. They would not credit me and they would not even look at the boat without me agreeing to pay them for two hours service. I have never been treated so poorly by a business. I spoke with the owner and he was the rudest. I will never go there again. I wish Sea Ray would find a competent dealer in Upstate NY.
We have serviced our boat there twice in the last 2 years. The mechanic Alex, helped us over the phone with a motor issue we had and I appreciated that he gave us advice without suggesting we had to have it serviced. The woman, Jo, who schedules, was so friendly and accommodating I would definitely recommend this business to friends and family.
I don't know what's worse their customer service or their workmanship. We've had the boat less than 1 year. When they store your boat and you purchase an oil change they have a 21 point checklist which apparently they don't follow. Included in their 21 point checklist is ensuring that the bellows are in proper working order. Apparently they don't really check the bellows as our boat sunk at the dock this weekend. according to our mechanic the bellows on the boat are the originals which means they were 13 years old. I called the main office to speak to somebody in charge they informed me that they aren't taking any responsibility. In addition to this the rubber on the boat trailer tires peeled right off the FIRST day we used it. the trailer was just "inspected". How in the world did it pass inspection. They agreed to replace one of the tires however during that process the person we were dealing with was yelling and screaming about it. In summary don't go there, just drive on by.
