Buying a boat from SkipperBud's - Lake Fenton in Fenton, Michigan? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask SkipperBud's - Lake Fenton which models suit the waterways near Fenton, Michigan.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at SkipperBud's - Lake Fenton.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like SkipperBud's - Lake Fenton will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. SkipperBud's - Lake Fenton should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

I went there to pick up my boat after winterization. I gave my name to one of the staff members, and when he went to confirm it with another employee, they didn’t realize I was standing right behind them. The other employee made rude and disrespectful jokes about my last name. On top of that unprofessional behavior, I was overcharged for the service. Between the disrespect and the pricing, the whole experience was unacceptable. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Requested more info on a boat I saw online a few months ago. Was told it had already sold, but was asked what I was looking for. Sent a reply, but never received another response. Boat I was interested in is still on their website, and the price still changes occasionally, so I guess they just don't like to sell boats?
We just bought our boat from them and we couldn't be happier. Jeff Marion from the Bay City store came down to work with us. We met him at the Novi Boat Show. Adam from the Fenton store did the demo for us. He did a great job.
AWEFULL service department! 2 phone calls and 2 e mails later... no response! If you won't help with a little problem now, Why in God's name would I trust you with a big purchase when I move to Florida next year? Asked for help SEVERAL times!
Great staff. I've always had good service and caring staff that took care of me. No concerns!
