The SLYC is a great place for a wedding venue, grad party of business outing. We found the reservation coordinator, Megan to be extremely knowledgeable and answered all of our questions, in a timely fashion. I would highly recommend this location for its' view, open atmosphere and customizable features.
We had our wedding reception there in June and overall, it turned out nice but there were some things that didn't go as well as planned. First off, if you are a bride, I would recommend finding another place. Denise, the "event coordinator," was extremely hard to get ahold of. She would take weeks to respond after a call, email and text for simple questions. As soon as she got the payment, I could never get ahold of her. She was also quite rude at times and I was not a fan of her mannerisms. Maybe it was the added stress of planning a wedding, but there were so many instances where I felt discouraged. It was nice to be able to bring all of our own drinks, décor and food, but set-up time was stressful for those who helped. There were members going in and out of the kitchen, taking ice out of the ice maker during set up (which is why we ran out of ice by the end of the night), disregarding the sign on the door that said there was a wedding being set up at 3pm. They did not care. Kids were running around the tables while my group was setting up fragile vases. There were some wedding crashers that were members there that helped themselves to our alcohol (about 3-4 of them). While most of the members were incredibly nice and helpful when I went there, Denise was never the friendliest. The website says anyone can arrive via boat and park there. Nope. We had to sign a contract with a $2000 deposit and get approved by the board just for our boat to park there. The website is quite contradicting. Even my catering company could not get ahold of Denise, we just had to basically go there one day without her to get a visual for set-up. I don't feel this venue is fully equipped or set-up properly to host wedding receptions. Graduation parties or smaller parties would be totally acceptable, but the lack of communication and the intrusion of members during set-up time made it difficult for a reception with 150 people. After it was said and done, the place looked beautiful and it was so nice to have it overlooking Spring Lake. Our catering company made it work and so did our bartenders, minus a few hiccups along the way. I offered to give feedback about my concerns to the manager of the club, but he never got back to me. So I hope this review will be helpful for future brides.
Our 6 and 7 year old girls love sailing. Thanks to all the young instructors for making their first time a positive experience!
