Buying a boat from D & R Sport Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask D & R Sport Center which models suit the waterways near Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at D & R Sport Center.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like D & R Sport Center will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. D & R Sport Center should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

My Hubby and I love to fish and I found this really amazing fillet board. I was going to give it away for a Christmas present (Great Idea Right!) but my hubby really likes it. Going to have to make a second trip back to D & R Sports! Can we order it online and can we share it with our friends? Thank you D & R Sports always worth the trip.
This is hands down the worst service department I’ve ever dealt with — not just in Michigan, but truly a contender for the worst in the entire United States. Service is consistently unreliable, disorganized, and careless. They say one thing, do another, and somehow always find a way to charge more than originally quoted. Nothing ever feels straightforward, and there is zero sense of accountability. I personally know a large handful of people who refuse to ever step foot in their service department again because the experiences are consistently bad. They do not stand behind their products, their customers, or their own warranties. Buying a warranty here is equivalent to donating money than receiving any real protection or service. To be fair, their retail side is much better. The store itself is nice, well-stocked, and worth browsing. But the service department? Get rid of it and stick to retail. If you value your time, your money, or your sanity, don’t put yourself through the same frustration so many customers already have. This place will never get another dollar from me — and based on what I’ve witnessed, I’m far from the only one who feels that way.
I had a wonderful experience at D&R Sports. When shopping for a fly rod for my son, Kevin was fantastic. The assortment, staff, expertise, and customer service exceeded my expectations. Also, they have a selection across all price points. Highly recommend!
I’ll start by saying I’m not usually someone who takes the time to write reviews, but in this case it felt necessary. In the greater Southwest Michigan area, there are several places to buy firearms and even more options for hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear. That said, D&R is hands down the only store I choose to shop at. Their selection is outstanding, whether you’re an avid hunter, fisherman, shooter, or just enjoy the outdoors, they carry just about anything you could need. On top of that, their firearm selection is extremely impressive. What really sets D&R apart though, in my opinion, is the staff. Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely eager to help. The folks behind the gun counter are always happy to answer questions, pull items to look at, and have a real conversation while doing so. That might sound small, but it makes a huge difference, there’s nothing worse than feeling awkward or rushed while checking out firearms. I’ve made several purchases here and have always had a great experience. D&R has earned my continued business, and I can’t recommend them enough to anyone in the area looking for quality products, knowledgeable staff, and a comfortable, welcoming environment.
Nathan the Fly Guy and Mrs Amy helped me out and went way above and beyond for me, especially since I am far from local ( I live in Texas). D&R also sold me a limited edition rod for MSRP and unlike everywhere else, they did not ask for a crazy price for it. Literally the best price anywhere. I could not have asked for better service, 10/10 best employees around.
