Malibu vs MasterCraft comes down to how each brand sells, powers and backs its boats. Malibu publishes starting prices, from $110,983 for its Response TXi MO ski boat, and builds its own Monsoon engines. MasterCraft uses Ilmor engines, does not list prices on its site, and Ilmor covers its naturally aspirated engines for 7 years or 1,000 hours.

All figures are the builders' own, read on 15 October 2026 from the 2027 lineups on their websites. Malibu's prices are its "as low as" figures for the base boat; its series pages do not tie the prices to a model year or say what they include.

Every figure in this comparison comes from the two builders' own websites, read on 15 October 2026. We used Malibu's series and model pages, its Monsoon engine, wave technology and warranty pages, and MasterCraft's family pages, XT23 specification page, engine, wave and warranty pages. Nothing here comes from a test drive or a sea trial, and no ride or wave quality is rated.
For the head-to-head, we picked each brand's 23-foot traditional-bow surf boat: the Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV and the MasterCraft XT23. The two builders do not always measure the same thing the same way, so where a figure may be defined differently, the article says so.
Both builders cover 20 to 24 feet with several models at each length, and Malibu's 26 LSV, at 26 ft 5 in, is longer than any MasterCraft.

Rows follow each builder's model names. Published lengths differ slightly from the names: Malibu lists the 22 LSV and 22 MXZ at 21 ft 11 in, and MasterCraft lists the X23 at 22 ft 11 in and the XStar 25 at 25 ft 7 in.
- Malibu M-Series: the M230 and M242, which Malibu places at the top of its lineup.
- Malibu LSV: four traditional-bow models from the 22 LSV to the 26 LSV, which Malibu calls the best-selling traditional-bow wake boat in the world.
- Malibu MXZ: three pickle-fork models, a wide-nose bow design that Malibu says maximizes bow space.
- Malibu Crossover/Ski: the Response TXi MO, 20 VTX and 21 LX, built for skiing as well as wake sports.
- MasterCraft XStar: the 23 and 25, MasterCraft's flagship, with a supercharged engine as standard.
- MasterCraft X: the X22, X23 and X24, with the Ilmor 6.2L GDI engine as standard.
- MasterCraft XT: four models from 20 to 24 feet, which MasterCraft describes as a surf boat first, with traditional and pickle-fork bows on offer.
- MasterCraft NXT: four models from 20 to 24 feet, which MasterCraft pitches as easier to own and use.
- MasterCraft ProStar: a 20-foot boat built for waterskiing.
The 23 LSV and the XT23 are close in size, with the same 102-inch beam, but they differ in fuel capacity, power options and published price.

Figures read on 15 October 2026. Malibu gives a hull length and MasterCraft a boat length, and neither page explains how its ballast figure is measured, so treat small gaps in those rows with care.
On the XT23, MasterCraft lists the Ilmor 5.3L GDI HO engine, the SurfStar system, underwater exhaust, a Z6 tower and a 12-inch touchscreen as standard. Malibu lists the 23 LSV with a power range of 360 to 652 hp, which spans its Monsoon M5Di and supercharged LT4 engines, and calls it the best-selling wake boat of all time.
Both brands shape the surf wave with hull devices, ballast and touchscreen presets, but they package the parts differently.
Malibu groups Surf Gate, Power Wedge III and Hard Tank ballast under the name Dynamic Wave Technology. Surf Gate creates the wave on either side of the boat and, Malibu says, adjusts the ballast automatically so the crew does not have to move. Power Wedge III fine-tunes wave height, length, shape and push, and the Hard Tank system uses sensors to monitor ballast levels. Malibu also offers Surf Band, a wrist-worn control that lets the rider change boat speed, wave push and shape, and the surf side while riding.
MasterCraft says it has offered custom surf since 2010 and today calls its system SurfStar, which is standard on the XStar, X, XT and NXT families. Rapid Surf loads factory preset waves, and Custom Surf lets you adjust and save your own. The FastFill ballast system, an upgrade on the XT23, moves 30 gallons a minute, according to MasterCraft, and every NXT has FasterFill, which adds an extra ballast pump. MasterCraft also uses a patented Switchback ballast tank that shifts ballast to balance the wave.
Malibu builds its own Monsoon engines, while MasterCraft buys its engines from Ilmor, its exclusive engine partner.
Malibu says Monsoon engines are designed, engineered and assembled in-house in collaboration with GM Marine. MasterCraft says Ilmor brings more than 30 years of racing expertise. The published ratings:
- Malibu Monsoon M5Di: 360 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.
- Malibu Monsoon M6Di: 430 hp and 460 lb-ft.
- Malibu Monsoon supercharged LT4: 652 hp and 670 lb-ft.
- Ilmor 5.3L GDI: 365 hp and 400 lb-ft, with a closed-cooled block for saltwater.
- Ilmor 5.3L GDI HO: 380 hp and 407 lb-ft, standard on the NXT family and on the XT23.
- Ilmor 6.2L GDI: 440 hp and 479 lb-ft, standard on the X family and an upgrade on the XT23.
- Ilmor 6.2L Supercharged: 630 hp and 665 lb-ft, available on the X family and standard on the XStar.
Each builder quotes its own ratings, so compare engines within a brand first and ask the dealer which engine the boat you are looking at actually has.
Malibu offers a five-year factory warranty that includes the engine, while MasterCraft splits coverage between a five-year, 500-hour boat warranty and a separate Ilmor engine warranty.
- Malibu: five years covering the powertrain, interior and upholstery, and audio. Gel coat is covered for one year. Coverage starts from the original retail purchase or first use, whichever comes first, and applies only when you buy from an authorized Malibu dealer.
- MasterCraft boat: MasterCare, a five-year or 500-hour warranty.
- Ilmor engine: seven years or 1,000 hours on naturally aspirated engines, and five years or 500 hours on the 6.2L Supercharged.
For used boats, MasterCraft says unexpired coverage can transfer to a second owner. The boat must be inspected at an authorized MasterCraft dealer, and the paperwork and a $500 payment must reach the dealer within 14 days of the sale and within five years of the original purchase. The engine transfer needs a separate fee. Malibu's warranty page does not cover transfers, so ask the dealer for the full warranty statement before buying a used Malibu.
Malibu lists a starting price for every model, while MasterCraft offers an online design center and a request-a-quote form instead of published prices. Malibu's "as low as" prices, read on 15 October 2026:
- Crossover/Ski: Response TXi MO $110,983, 20 VTX $119,607, 21 LX $120,747.
- LSV: 22 LSV $139,293, 23 LSV $146,973, 25 LSV $178,973, 26 LSV $237,454.
- MXZ: 22 MXZ $147,531, 23 MXZ $156,970, 24 MXZ $175,400.
- M-Series: M230 $209,173, M242 $280,747.
Malibu's pages do not say whether these prices include freight, dealer preparation or a trailer, so get an out-the-door quote for any boat you are serious about. Because MasterCraft does not publish prices, the fairest way to compare two similar boats is to price both with the same engine, tower and options from local dealers.
Choose the brand whose boat, engine and warranty fit how you ride, after a demo of both. On the published figures:
- You want to see prices up front: Malibu lists a starting price for every model; MasterCraft does not.
- You want one company behind the boat and the engine: Malibu covers both under its five-year warranty.
- You want the longest engine coverage: MasterCraft's Ilmor engines carry seven years or 1,000 hours, unless you choose the supercharged engine.
- You want the longest boat in either lineup: Malibu's 26 LSV, at 26 ft 5 in.
- You mostly waterski: look at Malibu's Response TXi MO and MasterCraft's ProStar side by side.
- You want a rider-worn control: Malibu's Surf Band lets the surfer adjust the wave from the water.

Malibu makes its own engines, sold under the Monsoon name. Malibu says they are designed, engineered and assembled in-house in collaboration with GM Marine. The lineup is the M5Di at 360 hp, the M6Di at 430 hp and the supercharged LT4 at 652 hp, and Malibu covers them under its five-year factory warranty when you buy from an authorized dealer.
MasterCraft uses Ilmor engines, and calls Ilmor its exclusive engine partner. The current options run from the 365 hp 5.3L GDI for saltwater use to the 630 hp 6.2L Supercharged. Ilmor's warranty is seven years or 1,000 hours on naturally aspirated engines and five years or 500 hours on the supercharged engine.
Malibu's published starting prices run from $110,983 for the Response TXi MO to $280,747 for the M242, read on 15 October 2026. The 23 LSV starts at $146,973. These are "as low as" figures for the base boat, and Malibu does not say what they include, so options, freight and dealer fees can add to the final price.
Yes, MasterCraft says unexpired coverage can transfer, with conditions. The boat must be inspected at an authorized MasterCraft dealer, and the sales paperwork and a $500 payment must be delivered within 14 days of the sale and within five years of the original retail purchase. Transferring the Ilmor engine warranty needs a separate fee.
