The main difference between a bowrider and a deck boat is how the bow is laid out. The bowriders compared here seat people in the bow ahead of the windshield, while the deck boats turn the bow into a boarding area with its own ladder. In three same-builder pairs, both types carried the same number of people.

How this comparison was made

The comparison uses builders that make both types, so each bowrider is set against a deck boat of similar length from the same company. Bayliner sells its V20 and V22 bowriders alongside its D20 and D22 deck boats, and Tahoe sells its T21 sport boat, a bowrider, alongside its 2150 deck boat. Every specification and price was read from the builders' own model pages on 12 October 2026. Nothing here comes from test drives or sea trials. Bayliner prices are left out because the starting price on Bayliner's model page and the price in its online configurator did not match. Searchshop listing figures are left out too, because the boat type on listings is entered by dealers and is not reliable enough to count bowriders and deck boats.

What is the difference between a bowrider and a deck boat?

A bowrider and a deck boat differ mainly in how the bow is laid out and used. A bowrider has a seating area in the bow, ahead of the windshield. Tahoe's T21 has dual forward lounges in the bow, and Bayliner's V20 has storage beneath its bow seating and a wraparound windshield with an opening center panel.

The deck boats compared here use the bow as a place to board as well as to sit. Tahoe's 2150 has a wraparound bow lounge and a bow platform with an anchor locker and a covered four-step boarding ladder, in addition to its aft ladder. Bayliner's D20 and D22 deck boats both list a bow ladder with a hinged lid, and Bayliner offers the D20 in two layouts: a side console with the most seating, or a dual console with a full windshield.

Does a deck boat hold more people than a bowrider?

A deck boat did not hold more people than a bowrider of similar length in any of the three pairs compared. Bayliner rates the V20 bowrider and the D20 deck boat for 10 people each, and the V22 and D22 for 12 each. Tahoe rates both the T21 and the 2150 for 11 people.

Width and load ratings do not follow one rule either. The D22 and the 2150 deck boats are both 8' 6" wide, against 8' 4" for the V22 and 8' 2" for the T21, but the D20 deck boat is narrower than the V20 bowrider (8' 1" against 8' 4"). Tahoe rates the 2150 for 2,200 lb of people, motor and gear, against 1,520 lb for the T21. In Bayliner's pairs, the maximum weight capacity is almost the same at 20 feet (1,650 lb for the V20, 1,653 lb for the D20), and the V22 bowrider is rated higher than the D22 deck boat (1,800 lb against 1,692 lb).

A deck boat's open bow changes how the space is used, but in these pairs it did not mean a higher passenger rating. Check the capacity of the exact model you are looking at.

Which has the deeper V hull, a bowrider or a deck boat?

Neither type always has the deeper V hull: the answer changed from builder to builder. Bayliner lists a 20-degree deadrise for both of its bowriders and 18 degrees for both of its deck boats. Tahoe's figures run the other way, with 16 degrees for the T21 bowrider and 20 degrees for the 2150 deck boat.

If you care about how a boat handles choppy water, compare the deadrise figures of the exact models you are considering rather than assuming one type has the sharper hull, and ask a dealer for a sea trial in the conditions you expect to boat in.

How do power, fuel and weight compare?

Power ratings and fuel capacity also change direction from pair to pair. Bayliner's bowriders are rated for more power than its deck boats: 175 hp for the V20 against 150 hp for the D20, and 225 hp for the V22 against 200 hp for the D22. Tahoe's 2150 deck boat is rated for 225 hp, against 200 hp for its T21 bowrider.

The V20 bowrider holds 45 gallons of fuel to the D20 deck boat's 33. At 22 feet the deck boat holds more, with 55 gallons for the D22 against 45 for the V22. Tahoe's 2150 holds 46 gallons and its T21 holds 42.

How much do they weigh?

Bayliner's approximate weights with the standard engine are close at 20 feet: 3,380 lb for the V20 and 3,396 lb for the D20. At 22 feet the D22 deck boat is heavier, at 3,994 lb against 3,731 lb for the V22. Add the trailer, fuel and gear before you check the total against your tow vehicle's rating. The Searchshop boat trailer guide covers trailer types and upkeep.

Is a deck boat more expensive than a bowrider?

In the one pair with published prices on the same basis, the deck boat cost more. With a Mercury 150 XL Pro XS FourStroke, Tahoe lists the 2027 T21 bowrider at $43,995 and the 2027 2150 deck boat at $48,995, a difference of $5,000. With a Mercury 200 XL FourStroke, the T21 is listed at $48,010 and the 2150 at $53,010, again $5,000 apart.

The gap is wider than it looks, because Tahoe's T21 price includes a trailer and its 2150 price excludes the optional trailer. Both are Tahoe's national prices before dealer prep and freight. When you compare any two boats, check whether each price includes the motor and trailer and which fees are added at the dealer.

Which one should you buy?

The right choice depends on how you use the bow, what you tow with and which features you want. Use these points to narrow it down:

  • Boarding from the front: look at deck boats; all three compared here have a bow boarding ladder, and Tahoe's 2150 adds a wraparound bow lounge.
  • Carrying more people: compare capacity plates model by model, because each pair compared here had the same person rating.
  • Handling in chop: compare deadrise and take a sea trial, since the deeper V switched sides between Bayliner and Tahoe.
  • Fishing as well as cruising: check for a livewell; Tahoe's 2150 deck boat has a 15-gallon aerated livewell in the bow.
  • Keeping the price down: in Tahoe's lineup the T21 bowrider was listed at $5,000 less than the 2150 with the same motor, and its price includes a trailer.

If you are also weighing a pontoon, read Pontoon vs. Deck Boat and the Searchshop boat buying guide. Before you buy a used boat of either type, work through the used boat inspection guide. Frequently asked questions

Common questions about bowriders and deck boats are answered below from the builders' published figures.

Does a deck boat hold more people than a bowrider?

A deck boat did not hold more people than a bowrider of similar length in the three pairs compared here. Bayliner rates its V20 bowrider and D20 deck boat for 10 people each and its V22 and D22 for 12 each, and Tahoe rates its T21 bowrider and 2150 deck boat for 11 each. Check the capacity of the exact model you are considering.

Are deck boats flat-bottomed?

The deck boats compared here have V hulls, not flat bottoms. Bayliner lists an 18-degree deadrise for its D20 and D22 deck boats, and Tahoe lists 20 degrees for its 2150 deck boat, which is more than the 16 degrees it lists for its T21 bowrider. Compare the deadrise of each model you are considering.

Can you pull skiers and tubes with a deck boat?

Deck boats can be set up for towing skiers and tubes. Tahoe's 2150 deck boat comes with a removable ski-tow pylon and in-floor ski and wakeboard storage, and its T21 bowrider also has a removable ski-tow pylon. Bayliner lists in-floor ski and wakeboard storage as standard on its D20 and D22 deck boats and its V20 and V22 bowriders.

Is a deck boat more expensive than a bowrider?

In Tahoe's 2027 lineup, the 2150 deck boat costs more than the T21 bowrider. With a Mercury 150 XL Pro XS, the 2150 is listed at $48,995 without a trailer and the T21 at $43,995 with a trailer. Both are national prices before dealer prep and freight, read on 12 October 2026.
