Cycle Design originated in 1969 as a way for owner Doug Mulligan to support his dirt bike racing habit. He would sell and service dirt bikes during the week and then race on Sundays. The original dealership was located in a dirt-floored former fruit stand in Putney, Vermont. In the early seventies, Doug relocated the business to Phillipston, Massachusetts. By 1973, Cycle Design had its first Suzuki Japanese franchise, which was 55 years ago! The dealership has developed significantly from its humble beginning.

Cycle Design is the best motorcycle shop that I have ever dealt with. The customer service was amazing and the advice they gave me was spot on. They were very open about the pros and cons of two motorcycles that I was looking at. I love the new bike I bought from them thanks to their open and honest approach. Since buying my bike just last week, they have already answered my "new owner" questions to help me understand my new machine and how to use it. I highly recommend Cycle Design and their entire staff. Great place and great people! Above is the review for my first bike that I bought this summer. It's now mid-December and I just bought my second bike in less than six months from Cycle Design. They really are the best motorcycle shop in New England. Their sales is top-notch, and their service and parts department are awesome. Jayma, Joe, and the others at Cycle Design will take excellent care of you not just on the day you buy the bike, but for as long as you own the bike. I've been dealing with motorcycle shops for over 50 years now, and Cycle Design is the best I've ever encountered.
I don't normally complain or write reviews like this, but the recent interaction I had with this dealership deserves some feedback. In short, I called about purchasing a bike they had in stock. Was ready to pay cash over the phone. They took my name and said someone would call me back. No call. I call back. Explained I wanted to purchase today and make arrangements to have bike delivered. The woman I spoke with had zero enthusiasm for making the sale happen or in helping to arrange transportation for the bike. I make the observation that maybe I should call somewhere else, and she agrees?! I guess this dealership isn't into making money? Called another dealership in the area and totally different attitude. Price confirmed (including delivery) and everything done to make the transaction easy. Not sure why this was so hard. Simple cash sale with no financing and these guys could care less to close the deal.
Bought a rebel 500 from cycle design. Great folks there at the shop. Jayma and Joe both were very helpful and knowledgeable in getting me on the right bike
Cool shop love the neon lighting and the dogs who will greet you at the door looking For treats and to be pet. They had what I was looking for quick and efficient ma and pa type shop definitely worth the “off the beaten path” scenic drive down. Will be back again you guys rock!
I found the bike I was looking for online at cycle design. I called them and confirmed they had the bike that was on the website. Larissa and jayma were extremely helpful and were super accommodating to my busy schedule. They answered all my questions and made the deal extremely smooth. I showed up and all the paperwork was done in 30 minutes with no headaches involved. I highly recommend this place to everyone looking for a bike or anything they sell. This was by far the best purchasing experience I have had to this day. Thank you again for everything!

Buying a snowmobile from Cycle Design in Athol, Massachusetts? Use this checklist to avoid costly surprises.
Inspect the track and slides
Lay the sled on its side and check the track for cracks, missing lugs, or cuts. Pull the track away from the slides and check for wear groove depth — worn slides increase drive noise and reduce efficiency.
Check the hood and tunnel for damage
Cracks in the hood or tunnel can signal a past crash. Look for mismatched or faded plastic, which often means replacement panels were installed after damage.
Inspect the carbides and skis
Carbide runners on the ski underside provide steering. Worn carbides (less than 3/16" remaining) reduce handling on packed snow. Ski replacement is inexpensive, but factor it into your offer.
Check coolant and oil
Pull the coolant reservoir cap and oil tank dipstick. Milky coolant signals water contamination. Low or dirty oil signals deferred maintenance. Ask ${dealerName} for service records.
Ask about storage and season history
A properly stored snowmobile — fuel stabilized, fogged engine, battery maintained — will start and run far better than one that sat neglected. Ask Cycle Design about the unit's storage and riding history.
Snowmobile financing is seasonal. Knowing the basics helps you get the best deal at Cycle Design in Athol, Massachusetts before the riding season starts.
Typical Loan Terms
24 to 60 months is typical for snowmobile loans.
Down Payment
10% to 20% down is standard. Off-season purchases sometimes qualify for promotional rates.
Pro Tip
Get pre-approved by your bank before visiting Cycle Design — it gives you a rate to compare against dealer financing.
Manufacturer finance programs (Ski-Doo, Polaris, Arctic Cat) often offer zero-interest or low-rate deals in the off-season. Ask Cycle Design what programs are currently available. Buying in spring or summer often yields better financing deals than buying in fall.
