A toy hauler is a travel trailer with a rear garage for ATVs, motorcycles or other gear; a standard travel trailer uses that space for living. In Forest River's 2027 Grey Wolf and Wildwood FSX lineups, each toy hauler puts more weight on the hitch than a similar-length travel trailer, but is not always heavier or pricier.
The table sets five toy hauler floor plans beside the travel trailer of the closest length from the same lineup. All figures are 2027 specifications from Forest River's website, read on 12 October 2026.

Lengths are exterior lengths. Unloaded weight is Forest River's unloaded vehicle weight (UVW), which leaves out cargo, fresh water and dealer-installed accessories.

The comparison uses published data, not test drives or inspections. Forest River sells several lineups that include both toy hauler and conventional travel trailer floor plans; this comparison uses two of them, the Cherokee Grey Wolf and the Wildwood FSX. Comparing within one lineup means every pair shares a maker and a model name.
Each toy hauler was paired with the travel trailer of the closest exterior length in the same lineup. Two pairings were ties: the 23DBH, 23MS and 26LP are all 29 ft 2 in., one inch longer than the 22RR, and the 29NM, 29QB and 29TE are all 5 inches from the 28RRTS. The tables show one of each, and the text says where the others change the result. Weights, lengths, heights and tank sizes come from each floor plan's page on Forest River's website, read on 12 October 2026. Wildwood FSX toy hauler floor plans marked TBD (230GT, 270GT and 310GT) were left out, and so was the 250GT (33 ft 5 in.), because the longest Wildwood FSX travel trailer with published specifications, the 260BHLE, is 28 ft 7 in. Asking prices come from Searchshop listings read the same day.
The difference is the rear garage. Forest River's RV definitions describe a travel trailer as a towable RV with a roof, floor and sidewalls made of rigid materials, and use the same wording for a toy hauler with one addition: a rear garage type storage facility.
Forest River describes the garage of the Grey Wolf 22RR as having a convertible rear ramp. Its listing of the 2027 Grey Wolf floor plans shows how the choice narrows: 16 travel trailer floor plans against four toy hauler floor plans. Forest River lists three of those four Grey Wolf toy haulers with no slide-outs; the 28RRTS has one.
Every toy hauler in this comparison has a higher hitch weight than the travel trailer of similar length from the same lineup. In the five pairs in the table, the gap ran from 10 lb (Grey Wolf 24RRT against 28QBH) to 310 lb (Wildwood FSX 190GT against 230RDLE). The toy hauler was also higher against each tied alternative: the 22RR's 800 lb against 775 lb for the 23MS and 560 lb for the 26LP, and the 28RRTS's 1,230 lb against 977 lb for the 29QB and 837 lb for the 29TE.
Hitch weight matters because it is carried by the tow vehicle. Ford's 2026 RV and Trailer Towing Guide defines tongue load as the amount of the trailer's weight that presses down on the trailer hitch, and says that when towing, the trailer's tongue load is also part of the cargo weight. The guide tells owners to see the label on the doorjamb for a specific vehicle's carrying capacity.
For a toy hauler, check the hitch weight against your vehicle's payload as well as the trailer's weight against its towing capacity. The best tow vehicles guide covers choosing a truck or SUV.
A toy hauler is not always the heavier trailer. In two of the five pairs in the table the toy hauler weighed more unloaded, by 534 lb (190GT) and 275 lb (18RR). In three it weighed less, by 255 lb (22RR), 160 lb (24RRT) and 20 lb (28RRTS). The pairing matters: the 22RR is lighter than the 23DBH and 23MS but 785 lb heavier than the 26LP, which is the same length, and the 28RRTS is 625 lb heavier than the 29QB.
Cargo carrying capacity (CCC) is what matters once you load bikes, quads and gear. Forest River defines it as the weight available for fresh water, cargo, optional equipment and accessories, equal to the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) minus the unloaded weight.

The toy hauler had more cargo capacity in four of the five pairs in the table; the 18RR had 265 lb less than the 20RDSE, and the 22RR has 545 lb less than the tied 26LP (3,002 lb). The Grey Wolf toy haulers have the same 52-gallon fresh water tank as the travel trailers they are paired with, so a bigger tank is not a given. Every toy hauler here is 1 to 5 inches taller than each travel trailer it is paired or tied with, which is worth checking against a garage door or storage bay.
Forest River says to allow 8.3 lb per gallon of fresh water. Filling the 22RR's 52-gallon tank uses 432 lb (rounded) of its 2,457 lb cargo capacity, leaving 2,025 lb for vehicles, gear, food and any optional equipment. Check the weight of each ATV, motorcycle or side-by-side you plan to carry against that figure before you buy.
Toy hauler asking prices in the Grey Wolf lineup do not carry a fixed premium over similar-length travel trailers. The table shows new Grey Wolf units listed on Searchshop on 12 October 2026, matched to each floor plan by the floor plan code in the listing. Medians are shown only where at least five units back them, and Black Label units are excluded.

The 18RR's median was $1,990 above the 20RDSE's and the 24RRT's was $1,103 above the 27LH's. The 22RR's median was $499 below the 23DBH's and $1,499 below the 23MS's, but $6,521 above the 26LP's, so the three 29 ft 2 in. travel trailers span $8,020 between them. The 28QBH and 28RRTS had no new listings, so the 24RRT is compared with the 27LH (33 ft 2 in.). Prices are dealers' advertised asking prices, and the 22RR median is rounded to the nearest dollar. Ask each dealer what the price includes before you compare.
Choose by what you carry and what you tow with. These pointers follow from the figures above.
- Choose a toy hauler if you bring ATVs, motorcycles, side-by-sides or other large gear, and your tow vehicle has payload to spare for the higher hitch weight.
- Choose a travel trailer if you want the widest choice of layouts in a lineup (16 Grey Wolf travel trailer floor plans against four toy haulers) or need to keep hitch weight down.
- Compare cargo capacity, not unloaded weight, when you plan to load vehicles. In these pairs the toy hauler usually had more cargo capacity, but not always.
- Check height if the trailer has to fit a garage, carport or storage bay.

A toy hauler is not always heavier than a travel trailer of similar length. In Forest River's 2027 Grey Wolf and Wildwood FSX lineups, two of five toy haulers weighed more unloaded than their travel trailer pair and three weighed less, one of them by only 20 lb. The result depends on the pairing: the 28RRTS is 625 lb heavier than the 29QB, which is as close in length as the 29NM. All five had a higher hitch weight, which counts against the tow vehicle's payload.
A toy hauler is not always more expensive than a travel trailer. Among new Cherokee Grey Wolf units listed on Searchshop on 12 October 2026, the median asking price of the 18RR and 24RRT toy haulers was $1,990 and $1,103 above similar-length travel trailers, while the 22RR's median was below two of the three travel trailers of its length and above the third.
Yes, toy haulers are sold as fifth wheels as well as travel trailers. Forest River lists its Vengeance Rogue Armored toy haulers in both fifth wheel and travel trailer versions. A fifth wheel is towed by a hitch mounted above or forward of the tow vehicle's rear axle, typically on a truck, according to Forest River's definitions. Our fifth wheel vs travel trailer comparison covers that choice.
