Pop-up camper vs travel trailer comes down to weight, height and price. A pop-up camper's roof and sidewalls fold down for travel, while a travel trailer's are rigid. Forest River's 2027 tent campers weigh 1,299 to 2,518 lb unloaded, and the 149 new pop-up campers read from Searchshop listings had a median asking price of $16,995.

Weights, lengths and heights are Forest River's published figures for its 2027 floor plans, read on 12 October 2026; floor plans marked "TBD" were left out. Asking prices are the prices dealers advertise on Searchshop listings read the same day; ask the dealer what freight, prep, taxes and fees are added. See pop-up campers for sale on Searchshop.

How this comparison was made

The comparison uses published data only, not test trips or towing tests. Forest River was used for the specifications because it sells tent campers and travel trailers under the same Rockwood brand and states every weight on the same basis, so the figures can be compared directly. The two travel trailer lines, Geo Pro and Mini Lite, show a smaller and a larger step up from a tent camper.

Forest River's floor plan pages do not show list prices, so prices come from dealer asking prices on Searchshop. Those were read twice on 12 October 2026, and both reads matched. Comfort, durability and resale value were not compared, because no maker publishes figures that allow a fair comparison.

What separates a pop-up camper from a travel trailer

The difference is the walls. Forest River defines a camping trailer as a towable RV built with a collapsible roof and collapsible partial sidewalls that unfold at camp and fold back up for travel. It defines a travel trailer as a towable RV whose roof, floor and sidewalls are made of rigid materials.

Forest River's camping trailers come in two shapes:

  • Tent campers: the Rockwood Tent and Flagstaff Tent lines. Each includes a Freedom Series (Flagstaff calls it the MAC Series) and an Off The Ground (OTG) series, which Forest River pitches for sleeping raised above the ground.
  • A-frame camping trailers: the Rockwood A-Frame and Flagstaff A-Frame lines. Their 2027 floor plans with published figures weigh 1,918 to 2,728 lb unloaded, similar to or a little more than the larger tent campers.

The Rockwood Tent and Flagstaff Tent pages list the same weights and lengths for matching floor plans, so this article quotes the Rockwood figures for both.

Weight and towing

Tent campers sit at the light end of Forest River's towable range, but the smallest travel trailers overlap the heaviest of them. Forest River's 2027 Rockwood Tent floor plans weigh 1,299 to 2,518 lb unloaded. The smallest Geo Pro, the G11LE, weighs 1,779 lb, which is less than three of the four Freedom Series tent campers. Larger Geo Pro floor plans reach 4,213 lb, and the Mini Lite runs from 4,472 to 6,123 lb.

What your tow vehicle has to handle

Forest River states that cargo carrying capacity (CCC) equals the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) minus the unloaded weight, so adding the two gives the most each trailer may weigh fully loaded:

  • Rockwood Tent: 2,258 lb (16OTG) to 3,800 lb (2270FT).
  • Rockwood Geo Pro: 2,749 lb (G11LE) to 5,498 lb (G20SFK).
  • Rockwood Mini Lite: 5,837 lb (2109S) to 7,745 lb (2523MBR).

Hitch weight follows the same pattern, from 162 to 300 lb for tent campers against 227 to 550 lb for the Geo Pro and 557 to 745 lb for the Mini Lite. Compare the loaded figure for the floor plan you want with the towing capacity in your vehicle's owner's manual, and see Searchshop's guide to tow vehicles if you are choosing a vehicle as well.

Height, length and storage

A folded tent camper stands well under two-thirds the height of a small travel trailer. Forest River lists the 2027 Rockwood Tent 1640FT at 5 ft 0 in. and the 2270FT at 5 ft 1 in. closed, both 84 in. wide. The Geo Pro G11LE stands 8 ft 7 in. tall and 88 in. wide, and the G19FDT 10 ft 1 in. tall and 98 in. wide.

Tent campers also grow at camp. The 2270FT measures 18 ft 7 in. closed and 20 ft 5 in. open, on a 12 ft box, while the 1640FT goes from 11 ft 10 in. to 17 ft 2 in. on an 8 ft box. If you plan to store the camper in a garage, measure the door opening against the closed height of the exact floor plan, because heights vary by model.

Features and living space

Travel trailers list holding tanks on their specification sheets, while Forest River's tent camper specification sheets do not. The Geo Pro G19FDT carries a 31-gallon fresh water tank, a 27-gallon gray tank and a 27-gallon black tank; the smaller G11LE lists 18 gallons fresh, 6 gallons gray and no black tank.

Tent campers still carry camping equipment. Forest River lists these among the 2027 Freedom Series standard features and its Core Convenience Package:

  • Standard: a 12-volt water pump, a two-burner range on select models (an outside griddle on units without a stove), a 30-amp power cord, battery box and wiring, solar panel prep and four stabilizer jacks.
  • Core Convenience Package: a 12-volt refrigerator with a 125-watt roof solar panel, a 20,000 BTU furnace, a hot water package, a 15,000 BTU under-bunk air conditioner and a power roof lift.

Forest River marks both lists as not available on its OTG models, so check the equipment of the exact unit with the dealer.

Where hybrid campers fit

A hybrid camper is a travel trailer with sections that expand at camp, which puts it between the two types. Forest River sells its Rockwood Roo as an expandable hybrid travel trailer with drop-down bunks. The two 2027 Roo floor plans, the 233S and 235S, weigh 4,976 and 5,478 lb unloaded with hitch weights of 678 and 766 lb, and both measure 24 ft 10 in. long. By weight, the Roo sits with the Mini Lite rather than with the tent campers.

What dealers are asking on Searchshop

New tent campers from Rockwood and Flagstaff have a median asking price about half that of new Rockwood Geo Pro travel trailers on Searchshop, at $14,995 against $28,995.

New units, read 12 Oct 2026ListingsMedian asking price

Rockwood and Flagstaff campers listed as Hard Side or A-frame41$19,995
Rockwood Geo Pro travel trailers325$28,995
Rockwood Mini Lite travel trailers344$40,987

Pop-up counts are listings in Searchshop's pop-up camper category, split by whether the listing title names a Hard Side or A-frame model or the floor plan code is an A-frame or T-series code. Geo Pro and Mini Lite counts are travel trailer listings whose title names the model. New units are model years 2025 to 2027, and medians are rounded to the nearest dollar. The search returned 218 of the 264 pop-up listings it reported. Used pop-up campers had a median asking price of $9,999 across 69 listings, spread over many model years.

Supply differs even more than price. Searchshop's RV for-sale page showed 27,183 travel trailers and 299 pop-up campers on 12 October 2026, so there are far fewer pop-ups to compare. Browse new and used RVs on Searchshop to see what dealers near you have.

Which one should you buy?

The better fit depends on what you tow with, where you store the camper and how much you want built in:

  • A lighter tow vehicle or a tight budget: a tent camper, with loaded weights from 2,258 to 3,800 lb and a new median asking price of $14,995 for Rockwood and Flagstaff models.
  • Garage storage: a tent camper, at 5 ft 0 in. and 5 ft 1 in. closed for the two floor plans checked, against 8 ft 7 in. and 10 ft 1 in. for the two Geo Pro floor plans checked.
  • A step between the two: an A-frame camper, at 1,918 to 2,728 lb unloaded, or the smallest Geo Pro floor plans from 1,779 lb, which overlap the larger tent campers in weight.
  • Holding tanks listed on the spec sheet and more space: a travel trailer such as the Geo Pro or Mini Lite, if your vehicle is rated for the loaded weight.

To compare every RV type first, read RV types explained. If a travel trailer wins, the travel trailer buying guide covers sizes and brands, and fifth wheel vs travel trailer covers the next step up.

Frequently asked questions

These answers cover the questions shoppers most often ask when choosing between the two.

Is a pop-up camper easier to tow than a travel trailer?

A pop-up camper is usually the lighter and lower load: Forest River's 2027 Rockwood Tent floor plans weigh at most 3,800 lb fully loaded, while 10 of its 13 Geo Pro travel trailer floor plans weigh more than that. The two tent campers whose heights were checked fold to about 5 ft high. The lightest Geo Pro weighs less than some tent campers, so compare exact floor plans against your vehicle's towing capacity.

How much does a pop-up camper weigh?

Forest River's 2027 Rockwood Tent pop-up campers weigh 1,299 to 2,518 lb unloaded, according to the maker. Adding each floor plan's cargo carrying capacity gives a fully loaded maximum of 2,258 to 3,800 lb. Its A-frame camping trailers weigh 1,918 to 2,728 lb unloaded. Check the label on the actual unit, because Forest River weighs every RV before it ships.

Is a pop-up camper cheaper than a travel trailer?

Yes, by median asking price, new pop-up campers on Searchshop cost less than new travel trailers from the same brand. On 12 October 2026, new Rockwood and Flagstaff tent campers had a median dealer asking price of $14,995, against $28,995 for the Rockwood Geo Pro and $40,987 for the Rockwood Mini Lite. Ask each dealer what freight, prep, taxes and fees are added.

What is a hybrid camper?

A hybrid camper is a travel trailer with sections that expand at camp. Forest River's Rockwood Roo is one example, sold as an expandable hybrid travel trailer with drop-down bunks. Its two 2027 floor plans weigh 4,976 and 5,478 lb unloaded and measure 24 ft 10 in. long, much heavier than a tent camper.
