What Is the Jayco Jay Feather?

The Jayco Jay Feather is a line of lightweight travel trailers designed for half-ton truck and SUV towers. Jayco — one of the largest RV manufacturers in North America and now under Thor Industries' ownership — built the Jay Feather to compete directly in the booming ultralight segment. It is not the lightest trailer on the market, but it combines honest weights, a name-brand manufacturer's warranty, and a dealer network that is hard to beat outside of the direct-to-consumer brands.

    Jay Feather 27RL31 ft 3 in6,290 lb8,995 lb42

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight) does not include water, propane, cargo, or personal gear. Always subtract UVW from GVWR to determine your cargo-carrying capacity — many buyers are surprised this number is only 1,000–1,700 lb on most lightweight trailers.

Build Quality: What Jayco Gets Right

The Jay Feather uses Jayco's Stronghold VBL construction:

    • Vacuum-bonded aluminum-framed laminated sidewalls (no wood studs — significant moisture resistance improvement)
    • Azdel composite substrate instead of luan plywood in floors and sidewalls (lighter, less susceptible to delamination)
    • Welded aluminum frame — a meaningful weight savings over older Jayco construction
    • Magnum Truss roof system — designed for 4-inch snow load, which matters in the shoulder season

Compared to a decade ago, Jayco's lamination quality has improved substantially. That said, roof sealant maintenance remains necessary every 12–18 months regardless of build quality — this is universal in the travel trailer segment.

    ModelGVWRMin. Recommended Tow Vehicle
16RB5,450 lbHalf-ton truck or large V6 SUV (Tahoe, Expedition)
    19MRK6,195 lbHalf-ton truck (F-150, Ram 1500, Silverado 1500)
22RB7,495 lbHalf-ton truck with tow package (payload verification required)
25RB7,995 lbHalf-ton truck (properly optioned) or three-quarter-ton preferred
    27RL8,995 lbThree-quarter-ton truck strongly recommended

Important: "Half-ton towable" marketing on RVs above 7,000 lb GVWR is legal but potentially unsafe without verifying your specific truck's payload rating against the tongue weight. The 27RL can exceed the safe payload capacity of a well-optioned F-150 — budget for a Ram 2500 or F-250 if this is your target model.

    Interior Quality and Features

    Where Jayco Wins:

    • Dealer network: Jayco has more authorized dealers in North America than any competitor — crucial for warranty work
    • King bed availability: Several floorplans offer a true king bed, which is genuinely rare at this price
    • Solar prep: Standard wiring for solar panel addition (200W capability without rewiring)

    Where Competitors Win:

    • Grand Design Imagine offers a superior one-piece fiberglass roof (less maintenance)
    • Forest River Salem has a slightly more intuitive kitchen layout in comparable floorplans

    Known Issues and Owner Feedback

    • Slide room seal maintenance: The slide topper seals require inspection after every 5–10 trips, especially in dusty environments
    • Water heater bypass winterization: Some owners report the bypass valve access is awkward compared to competitors
    • Cabinet hardware: A handful of owners report hinges and door latches loosening after the first season — a 20-minute fix but should not happen on a new unit

Frequently Asked Questions About the Jayco Jay Feather

Is the Jayco Jay Feather a good trailer for beginners?

Yes — the combination of wide floorplan selection, strong dealer network (warranty service near you is likely), and reliable Jayco brand history makes it one of the safest first-time buyer choices in its price range.

How much does a Jayco Jay Feather cost?

Retail MSRP ranges from approximately $28,000 (16RB) to $42,000 (27RL) as of 2026. Expect to negotiate 15–20% off MSRP at most dealerships, especially on previous-year inventory.

Is the Jayco Jay Feather better than the Forest River Salem?

They are close competitors. The Jay Feather edges out the Salem on build consistency and dealer network density. The Salem beats it on per-dollar feature count (more standard inclusions at a given price). Which wins depends on what matters most to you — service network access or upfront value.
