    RV Solar Power Guide

Solar power has transformed RV travel — it enables truly off-grid camping (boondocking) without generator noise or reliance on campground hookups. A well-designed solar system keeps your batteries charged, runs your lights, fans, and electronics, and can even run a 12V compressor refrigerator indefinitely. This guide covers everything you need to size and build the right solar setup for your RV.

    Understanding Your Power Needs

Before sizing a solar system, you need to know how much power you actually use. Make a list of every 12V and 120V appliance you run while camping: lights, fans, phone chargers, laptop, TV, water pump, furnace blower, and refrigerator. Most appliances have their wattage printed on them — check the label or manual. Add up the watts for each appliance multiplied by how many hours per day you typically run it to get daily watt-hours (Wh). A typical couple boondocking uses 50–150 Ah per day (600–1800 Wh at 12V). A family running more devices comfortably may use 150–300 Ah per day. Knowing your actual consumption guides every other sizing decision.

    Solar Panels and Battery Banks

Solar panels are rated in watts (e.g., 100W, 200W, 400W). A 200W panel in full sun produces about 800–1000 Wh on a good day, accounting for real-world efficiency losses. For 150 Ah/day consumption, a 400–600W panel array and 200–300 Ah of usable battery capacity is a reasonable starting point. Battery chemistry matters significantly. AGM lead-acid batteries are affordable ($150–$300 each) but only allow 50% discharge depth — a 200 Ah bank gives you 100 Ah of usable power. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries allow 80–90% discharge depth, last 3–4x longer, and charge faster — but cost $700–$1,500 each for 100 Ah. Most serious boondockers are switching to lithium for the combination of usable capacity and longevity.

    Ready to Get Started?

A properly sized solar setup pays for itself over time in saved generator fuel and campground electrical fees. For most RVers who boondock occasionally, a 400W panel system with 200 Ah of lithium battery is an excellent starting point. Full-timers and serious boondockers benefit from 600–1200W of panels and 400+ Ah of lithium. Browse current RV listings to find the right rig for your solar-powered adventure lifestyle.

How much does an RV solar setup cost?
A basic entry-level system (200W panel, 100W charge controller, 100 Ah AGM battery) runs $400–$700 DIY. A capable boondocking system (400–600W panels, MPPT controller, 200 Ah lithium, inverter) runs $2,000–$5,000 installed. Full-timer setups with 1000W+ and 400 Ah lithium can run $6,000–$12,000.

    RV Buying Guide

So, you've decided to jump into the RV lifestyle. Good for you. There’s nothing quite like the freedom of the open road, waking up to a new view every morning, or having your own bed no matter where you roam. But let me tell you, buying an RV can be a minefield. I’ve owned everything from a tiny travel trailer I dragged behind a minivan (don’t ask) to a massive diesel pusher, and I’ve made pretty much every mistake in the book. I’ve bought too small, too big, too cheap, and even too expensive for what I got. I've been stranded, over-budgeted, and outright confused by the sheer number of options. This guide is here to make sure you don't repeat my blunders. We're going to cut through the marketing fluff and give you the straight talk on what really matters. By the time you finish reading, you’ll understand the different types of RVs, what they realistically cost, how to finance one without getting fleeced, and—critically—how to pick a towable RV that your truck can actually, safely handle. We'll talk about real models like the Grand Design Imagine and the Newmar Dutch Star, discuss their price points, and even point out their weak spots. You'll walk away knowing exactly what RV makes sense for your adventures and your wallet, ready to make an informed decision and hit the road with confidence.

    Best RVs for Solo Travel

Solo RVing is one of the fastest-growing segments of the RV market. Travelers who want to go where they want, when they want, without coordinating schedules are discovering that a well-chosen small RV is the perfect travel companion. But the needs of a solo traveler differ significantly from a family — what you need is a rig that's easy to drive, simple to set up, fits in more campsites, and is efficient rather than spacious.
