Buying a motorcycle from Big Sky Harley-Davidson in Great Falls, Montana? Follow this checklist before you commit.
Verify the title and VIN
Check the VIN on the frame, engine, and title to confirm they match. Run the VIN through a motorcycle history report. Big Sky Harley-Davidson should be able to provide documentation for any bike in their inventory.
Check the fork seals and bearings
Look for oil weeping down the fork tubes — a sign the seals need replacement. Grab the front wheel and push/pull firmly to check for play in the steering head bearings.
Inspect the chain and sprockets
A worn chain will have excess slack and the sprocket teeth will look hooked or pointed instead of rounded. Chain and sprocket replacement runs $200–$500. Factor that into your offer if it's needed.
Check tire age and tread depth
Look for the DOT date code on the sidewall — tires over five years old should be replaced regardless of tread. Tires are a safety item, not a cosmetic one.
Take a test ride
Confirm the clutch engages smoothly, the brakes feel firm, and the bike tracks straight at speed. Listen for valve noise, exhaust leaks, or electrical issues. A short test ride catches problems a visual inspection misses.

A big thank you to the entire staff at Big Sky Harley-Davidson. My sales agent Ross, did a great job providing me with all the time I needed to make the right choice in the purchase of my first Harley-Davidson motorcycle. No pressure, answered all of my questions friendly and knowledgeable. A big thank you to Josh for taking the time to talk with me regarding my purchase and to Craig for handling all of my paperwork. I will recommend this dealership!
Awesome and highly professional 👍💪🇺🇸🌵🌅🌞 Greetings to Brian..🙏🙏🙏
I don’t leave reviews unless it’s deserved and this one was earned..! I wanted to say thank you to the boys over at BigSky Harley. From the front desk w/Bob, all the way to the service department w/Chris, I had a fantastic experience. A special thank you to Chris and I appreciate your help very much! From ordering parts and everything “I” wanted for my bike, to their performance/service, I had fun doing it. I have a 2019 Softail Slim and went to stage VI over the winter. Wow I couldn’t be happier and she is running amazing. I will definitely be back to have more work done (I live in Bozeman) and again I just wanted to say thank you! Keep up the great work and customer service.
Spoke to the owner directly just now. Awesome guy. Listened to the concerns. Spoke to me very professionally. Understands the issue. Look forward to doing business in the future. More business owners should be like Ryan. You could learn a lot from the way he handled this situation. As most us know, character and integrity is sometimes how we handle situations when things getessed up. Thanks for your time today sir!
broke down on the way up to Great Falls, the greatest city on this earth statistically. Stator broke, would not produce power to the regulator. Big Sky was closed , Monday, but someone was inside the locked doors and he took the Harley and placed it in a secure place and the next morning the boys got on it and had to order another stator in. We were on our way the next day afternoon, they ordered the stator, installed it, huge endeavor, and had us on our way. Huge thanks to Big Sky .....old school hospitality and great service.
