The best dirt bike for a beginner is one you can reach the ground on and handle when it tips over. Shorter and first-time riders should start with a 125: the Honda CRF125F Big Wheel, Yamaha TT-R125LE or Suzuki DR-Z125L. Taller adults should look at the Yamaha TT-R230, Kawasaki KLX230R S or Honda CRF300F.
| Model (year) | Seat height | Weight, ready to ride | Base MSRP |
| Honda CRF125F Big Wheel (2027) | 30.9 in. | 199 lb | $3,999 |
| Yamaha TT-R125LE (2026) | 31.7 in. | 198 lb | $3,599 |
| Suzuki DR-Z125L (2026) | 32.0 in. | 196 lb | $3,649 |
| Yamaha TT-R230 (2026) | 34.3 in. | 251 lb | $4,699 |
| Kawasaki KLX230R S (2027) | 34.4 in. | 262.4 lb | $4,999 |
| Honda CRF300F (2027) | 35.0 in. | 271 lb | $5,099 |
| Kawasaki KLX300R (2027) | 35.4 in. | 282.2 lb | $5,799 |
Base prices exclude destination charges, dealer fees, taxes and title. Honda lists a $300 destination charge on these models and Yamaha lists $340. Suzuki lists $300 plus a $150 surcharge on the DR-Z125L, and Kawasaki says its base prices exclude destination without giving the amount. Kawasaki weights are for the standard model; the 50-state versions weigh 264.5 lb (KLX230R S) and 286.7 lb (KLX300R).

These picks come from published data, not test rides. Each bike is a four-stroke off-road trail model that its maker sells in the US, and each was compared on what a new rider can check before visiting a dealer: seat height, weight, price, starting method and gearbox. Every figure was read from the manufacturer's own US website on 14 October 2026, using the newest model year listed there.
Weights are each maker's ready-to-ride figure. Yamaha quotes wet weight with all fluids and a full tank, Honda quotes curb weight with a full tank, Kawasaki quotes curb weight with the tank more than 90 percent full, and Suzuki quotes curb weight without defining it. Treat small gaps between brands as rough. Motocross race bikes are left out; Yamaha, for example, lists them separately from its trail bikes.
The three 125cc trail bikes suit adults of shorter stature and first-time riders, with seat heights between 30.9 and 32.0 inches and ready-to-ride weights under 200 pounds. All three use a 19-inch front wheel and a 16-inch rear wheel, which keep the seat low.
- Honda CRF125F Big Wheel: 30.9-inch seat, 199 pounds, fuel injection, electric start and a four-speed gearbox, from $3,999. Honda also sells the standard CRF125F, with smaller 17-inch and 14-inch wheels and a 29.1-inch seat, from $3,599.
- Yamaha TT-R125LE: 31.7-inch seat, 198 pounds wet, electric start, a carburetor and a five-speed gearbox, from $3,599. Yamaha says it suits "everyone from bigger kids to adults."
- Suzuki DR-Z125L: 32.0-inch seat, 196 pounds, a carburetor and a five-speed gearbox, from $3,649. It starts with a kickstarter, not a button, which matters if you would rather not kick-start a bike on a hill.
Taller adults who want a full-size bike should start with an air-cooled trail model in the 230 to 300 class, which pairs a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel with a six-speed gearbox. Seat heights run from 34.3 to 35.0 inches, so try each one for reach before buying.
The Yamaha TT-R230 has a 223cc air-cooled engine with a carburetor, electric start, a 34.3-inch seat and a 251-pound wet weight, from $4,699. Yamaha calls it "a great choice for both beginner and intermediate riders." It carries a 90-day limited factory warranty.
The Kawasaki KLX230R S has a lower seat than the standard KLX230R. It has a 233cc air-cooled engine with fuel injection, a 34.4-inch seat and a 262.4-pound curb weight, from $4,999. The standard KLX230R costs the same and weighs the same, but its seat is 35.6 inches and its suspension travel is 9.8 inches at each end, against 8.7 inches front and 8.8 inches rear on the S.
The Honda CRF300F has an air-cooled engine with fuel injection, electric start, a 35.0-inch seat and a 271-pound curb weight, from $5,099 for 2027. The 2026 model listed at $4,999. Honda includes a transferable six-month limited warranty.
The Kawasaki KLX300R suits a taller beginner who expects to ride harder trails soon. It is the only bike in this guide with a liquid-cooled engine, a 292cc DOHC single with fuel injection. Its suspension has 11.2 inches of travel at each end, with adjustable damping, and its seat is 35.4 inches. It weighs 282.2 pounds at the curb and costs $5,799 for 2027, against $5,749 for 2026.
That extra suspension comes with the tallest seat in the comparison table and 19.8 more pounds than the KLX230R S. A rider who is still learning to stop and turn may find a TT-R230, KLX230R S or CRF300F easier to manage.
Size a beginner dirt bike by sitting on it in your riding boots, because the seat height on a spec sheet does not tell you how a bike fits your legs. Seat width, suspension sag and your inseam all change how far you can reach.
- Reach: you should be able to steady the bike with your feet when you stop. A seat difference of a little over an inch, such as the 34.4-inch KLX230R S against the 35.6-inch KLX230R, can decide that.
- Weight: a beginner will drop the bike and pick it up many times. The 125s here weigh 196 to 199 pounds ready to ride; the full-size bikes weigh 251 to 282.2 pounds.
- Wheel size: 19-inch and 16-inch wheels keep the 125s low. Full-size trail bikes use 21-inch and 18-inch wheels and sit taller.
- Starting: the Honda and Yamaha bikes here have electric start. The Suzuki DR-Z125L uses a kickstarter.
Before the first ride, a training course helps. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's DirtBike School is a one-day, hands-on session that it says is open to anyone six years old or above. Searchshop's motorcycle gear guide covers the helmet, boots and other gear to buy alongside the bike.
Dealer asking prices on Searchshop for these bikes mostly matched the maker's list price for the same model year when read on 14 October 2026. The counts below are new-bike listings whose title matched the model name; almost no used examples were listed, so used prices are not shown.
| Model | New listings | Model years | Median asking price |
| Honda CRF125F and Big Wheel | 14 | 2024 to 2026 | $3,599 |
| Yamaha TT-R125LE | 10 | 2026 | $3,599 |
| Suzuki DR-Z125L | 8 | 2026 | $3,649 |
| Yamaha TT-R230 | 8 | 2025 and 2026 | $4,699 |
| Kawasaki KLX230R and KLX230R S | 6 | 2026 | $4,999 |
| Honda CRF300F | 5 | 2026 | $4,999 |
Most of these units are 2026 bikes, and some are older. A 2026 Honda CRF300F listed at $4,999 is $100 below the 2027 list price. Ask each dealer for a written out-the-door price, because asking prices leave out destination, setup and fees.
Start with your height and the trails you will ride, then choose on starting method and price.
- Shorter rider or nervous first-timer: a Honda CRF125F Big Wheel or Yamaha TT-R125LE, both with electric start.
- Tight budget on a 125: the Yamaha TT-R125LE at $3,599, or a standard Honda CRF125F at the same price if you are short enough for its 29.1-inch seat.
- Taller adult on easy trails: a Yamaha TT-R230 or Kawasaki KLX230R S.
- Taller adult who wants fuel injection and a longer warranty than Yamaha's 90 days: the Honda CRF300F, or a 2026 one at a lower price.
- Taller rider planning harder trails soon: the Kawasaki KLX300R.

These short answers cover sizing, cost, street use and training for a first dirt bike.
A beginner adult should get the smallest bike they fit comfortably, judged by seat height and weight rather than engine size. For a shorter adult, a 125 with a seat of 30.9 to 32.0 inches, such as the Yamaha TT-R125LE, is the place to start. A taller adult can start with a full-size trail bike with a seat of 34.3 to 35.0 inches, such as the Yamaha TT-R230 or Kawasaki KLX230R S. Sit on each one in riding boots before you buy.
A 250 is not too big for a beginner if it is a trail model, but a 250 motocross bike is a race machine. Yamaha calls its 223cc TT-R230 trail bike "a great choice for both beginner and intermediate riders," while it lists the YZ250F in its motocross range. Check which category a bike belongs to before comparing engine sizes.
A new beginner dirt bike costs $3,599 to $5,799 at base list price for the models in this guide, before destination charges, fees and taxes. Honda adds $300 destination, Yamaha $340, and Suzuki $300 plus a $150 surcharge on the DR-Z125L. Searchshop dealer asking prices on 14 October 2026 mostly matched list prices.
No, the bikes in this guide are off-road models, not street-legal motorcycles. Honda says the CRF125F Big Wheel and CRF300F meet EPA and California off-road emissions standards, and Suzuki says the DR-Z125L is eligible for California off-road registration. If you want one bike for trails and roads, look at dual-sport models, which Yamaha lists separately, such as the XT250.
Yes, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation runs DirtBike School, a one-day, hands-on training session. The foundation says it is open to anyone six years old or above and that new riders will benefit from it. Find a course near you on the MSF DirtBike School page.
