Vehicle Service Contracts come in two fundamental structures: exclusionary (covers everything except what's listed — the better type) and inclusion/named-component (covers only what's listed — typically narrower). True bumper-to-bumper exclusionary coverage is the gold standard and closest to the OEM new-car warranty experience. Be aware of common exclusions regardless of contract type: pre-existing conditions (anything wrong at the time of purchase), maintenance items (filters, brakes, tires), wear-and-tear items (clutches, belts, gaskets in some contracts), and consequential damage (damage to other components caused by a covered failure — often disputed). Read the exclusions section of any VSC more carefully than the coverage section.

Extended warranties make the most financial sense for vehicles with higher-than-average ownership costs: luxury European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Land Rover) where out-of-warranty repairs are significantly more expensive than Japanese or domestic equivalents; vehicles with known reliability issues for a specific model year; buyers who can't tolerate a large unexpected repair bill and prefer payment certainty. They make the least sense for reliable vehicles (Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Mazda) with strong long-term reliability records — the expected repair costs over the contract period are often less than the contract cost. The break-even point requires enough covered repairs to exceed the contract premium. Statistically, for reliable vehicles, most VSC buyers don't break even — the profit margin in VSC sales is substantial.

Dealership-offered VSCs are almost never the best value — dealer F&I (finance and insurance) departments earn substantial commissions on VSC sales, often 30–50% of the contract cost. Third-party warranty companies (Endurance, CARCHEX, Protect My Car) offer the same or better coverage at lower cost and can be purchased any time during the OEM warranty period. Always negotiate on extended warranty price — VSCs are highly negotiable, often by 30–40% off the initial quote. Never be pressured into deciding at delivery; you can purchase equivalent coverage later. Check the administrator's reputation (not just the seller's) — it's the warranty administrator, not the dealership, who actually pays claims. Look for A or A+ BBB rating and verify the administrator is backed by an insurance carrier.
