I wish someone had outlined this for me before I went through working with John Peterson (buyer side). He had the vessel wrongly listed (entire wrong model), and did not review the boat at all. Took the owner's word, but this is why we have sea trials. After the survey, I had my concerns about the conditions of the trailer since I would be driving this back 30+ hours north. He tried to push me into signing, but I made sure the trailer repairs were written in. Where I failed as a buyer was trusting John's professionalism. MAKE SURE TO WRITE ANY PROMISES IN THE ACCEPTANCE AGREEMENT, OR JOHN WILL NOT HONOR IT. I was told by John that there was a brand new canvas enclosure (still in the box) included with the boat (it was not present at the sea trial). I was more worried about hauling the trailer back, I made sure the trailer repairs were written in but I didn't think to add the isinglass (canvas) to the acceptance form. Driving down I only had digital copies of the closing documents - I asked that John print them out (and bring the title) in case I need them for DOT or police. John was unable to provide even this. When I showed up, I inspected the vessel and found a used canvas tossed inside. I get back after a grueling 38 hour trip, (three blown trailer tires) to find out that the canvas doesn't fit the boat! Where I find the lack of professionalism is not just the minimal inspection on the boat he is supposed to be selling, but when lied and said he put the canvas on himself! Quite literally is made for a different boat, and trying to resolve with him is a waste. Instead he asks that you "Write a nice email supporting me to the owner of United Yacht Sales". Regardless, nothing was done ($4-7k to replace). I can not iterate enough, please do 110% of your own due diligence (as you should) but do not trust his word or you will get burned. For a moment, he offered to have them made if the seller doesn't pay he will - this was complete BS - spent months getting him quotes and waiting for a resolution only to have nothing happen. 10/10 would not do business with him again.
John is a real expert when it comes to boats. We called him and told him what we were looking for and when he found just the right boat he called us and we bought it that day. He helped us arrange to get the boat inspected and gave us good advice about marine mechanics. I would definitely recommend him for your next purchase .
John Peterson of Untied Yacht Sales of the Carolinas is great to work with . We just finished purchasing our second Yatch with John’s help. Being an out of state buyer having someone as knowledge and helpful as John Peterson to work with is absolutely essential. John is very knowledge about his boats and is always available to answer any questions I might have. From my initial inquiry to pre purchase survey and all the communication in between, I never felt uneasy about anything I needed to ask John about all the way through closing, delivery and post delivery. John’s help in providing access to the seller and marinas involved is above and beyond. John a great broker to work with and we highly recommend John to anyone looking to buy a vessel no matter the type or size he is a very knowledgeable broker and sailor . John Osgood
John went out of his way to help me. He was incredibly patient and really had my best interests at heart. Would recommend him to everyone. The sale was difficult on my end and John handled everything like a star and made it happen. Kathy was wonderful, compassionate, and a true joy to work with. Kathy worked tirelessly to make the closing happen.
EXTREMELY Unprofessional, they will not provide hull ID # information on their boat listings for sale. If you are out of state you are out of luck!! If you want to obtain information on a boat without a hull ID# to reference it is extremely difficult. United Yacht Sales of the Carolina do not want to assist potentail customers. I gave 2 stars as their website is easy to navigate.

Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask United Yacht Sales - South Carolina / North Carolina Area which models suit the waterways near And South Carolina Area, North Carolina.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at United Yacht Sales - South Carolina / North Carolina Area.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like United Yacht Sales - South Carolina / North Carolina Area will accommodate this request.
