Buying a boat from Starved Rock Marina in Ottawa, Illinois? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Starved Rock Marina which models suit the waterways near Ottawa, Illinois.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Starved Rock Marina.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Starved Rock Marina will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Starved Rock Marina should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

On their back lot, out by 34, there was a couple dozen dilapidated abandoned boats and watercraft in various stages of decay. Most are gone now in 2022. I like to photograph a bunch of abandoned places and thought these old hulls could make for some cool photos. I looked for someone to ask permission from but struck out. The marina appeared closed but the gates were wide open. I walked around the interesting boat boneyard for a few minutes, took some pics then got on my way.
Boat tour was nice. Eagle nests were pointed out. Saw young ones & adults.
Love staying there. But harbor master at marina doesn't warn of water issues when you check in. Low water near high school exposed a under water deflection wall. It caused ten thousand dollars damage to our boat. Out drive and gel coat. They fix boat damage, which is why they don't warn you.
I Dropped by boat over 6 weeks ago, to get her summerizesd and fuel adjustment . It was picked up this weekend with a torn cover . I spoked with joe several times over the 6 week time. Never was told about the damage to my cover. Their as no damage or torn when boat was drops off. I talked with joe on Monday. About this concern. It was never brought to my attention. May 27, i spoked with joe the lead mechan. I’m still waiting for the phone that he said has going to investigate. They lost a customer for being dishonest, and unresolved and no follow up either.
I recently moved my father’s boat to this marina. I feel at home here. The owner Alissa Bumpus and her son Zach are amazingly helpful and kind. The service dept “John” has been nothing less than a life saver. He treats my dad’s boat as if it were his own and that means the world to me. I dry dock here and valet in and out. Prices are good and the location is spot on. Not to mention there is also a great restaurant right there at the marina. So amazing. I love it here. ♥️🚤⚓️♥️
