Buying a boat from Rock Outdoors - Hardy in Hardy, Virginia? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Rock Outdoors - Hardy which models suit the waterways near Hardy, Virginia.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Rock Outdoors - Hardy.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Rock Outdoors - Hardy will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Rock Outdoors - Hardy should be able to walk you through the paperwork.
Marine financing has unique terms. Here is what to know before financing a boat through Rock Outdoors - Hardy in Hardy, Virginia.
Typical Loan Terms
10 to 20 years for larger boats. Smaller boats are typically financed over 5 to 10 years.
Down Payment
10% to 20% is standard. Some lenders require more for older vessels.

Great addition to Smith Mountain Lake! Love their selection of clothing and accessories. They did an awesome job with their SML t-shirts and gifts as well! Went on opening day and the parking lot was full with people parking in the grass! They have a lot of boats, fishing gear, kayaks, and other boating items! Definitely check it out!
Thank you Michael Harless and Rock Outdoors for the sound advice in the purchase of the Minn Kota 112 Terrova 72”shaft. I installed it about two weeks ago and we have been out several times. Everything works great. It is just what I needed for trolling by myself and for anchoring the boat. I took our 8,500+ pound 28’ cruiser out on the lake in a pretty substantial wind and the motor performed great trolling and at anchor. The auto pilot is my favorite feature.
I tried for the last 2 days to get a service appointment. The service manager never called back, and the best I could get out of the service department was " you can just bring it and leave it. We will get to it when we can." And to give me the excuse of "we have a lot of recalls to do right now" as to why I cant schedule an appointment is pitiful. I'll make the trip to Highes Marine. What a joke.
Bought a kayak from Justin and he was an awesome salesman! I lost some paperwork and he went above and beyond to help me get what I needed, I highly recommend and will purchase from again! Thank you!
Service department is slow and expensive. Took my boat to them at the end of May and got it back the first of September.
