Buying a boat from Okoboji Boat Works in Okoboji, Iowa? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Okoboji Boat Works which models suit the waterways near Okoboji, Iowa.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Okoboji Boat Works.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Okoboji Boat Works will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Okoboji Boat Works should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

They’re great! The boats are good, the instructions are good, ask any questions and you get an answer. We had no issue with the check in, rental, driver sign in, or returns. The store is loaded with goodies, and the prices are also good considering the alternative is buying, storing, trailering and licensing a boat yourself! Friendly informative staff all around. It is a Funhouse parking lot but provides lots of parking. Used these services many times and always had a good experience.
So we really only spent time in the Fish House, since it's January and that was about the only thing open in the area. There was a woodburning stove in the corner, which gave the instant COZY feeling when walking in. It was like being a souped up ice fishing shack. Our son rented some ice skates to go out on the lake which was a blast for him. We could have some libations, popcorn, and do some fishing right from inside the shack. We had a great time!
We rented a pontoon (Crystal), a Crownline (speed boat), and a couple wave runners during our visit to Okoboji. We were in town for a week and after renting the pontoon and a wave runner, a few days later we decided to go back and do it again. The wave runners are super fun and the whole family had a great time! Everyone at Okoboji Boat Works was friendly and extremely helpful.
These guys are a top-notch operation. Effortless to work with, friendly, and accommodating. We had hooked up our rented tube wrong so it got deflated while pulling. We brought it back and they replaced it in a heartbeat. Picking up and dropping off was very very easy and they answered all our questions with ease and didn't make me feel bad for asking a stupid question or two.
We had a cruise trip there with a good. Ambience and overall environment was good.
