Boat Buyer's Guide – Northwest Water Sports

Buying a boat from Northwest Water Sports in Redmond, Washington? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.

  1. 1

Match the boat to your waters

Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Northwest Water Sports which models suit the waterways near Redmond, Washington.

  2. 2

    Inspect the hull carefully

Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.

  3. 3

    Check engine hours

Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Northwest Water Sports.

  4. 4

    Request a sea trial

Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Northwest Water Sports will accommodate this request.

  5. 5

    Verify title and registration

Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Northwest Water Sports should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

I have owned a MasterCraft boat for over 25 years, and owned three boats before that. I am a big fan of MasterCraft, and have interacted with MasterCraft HQ and many of their dealerships. MasterCraft is an outstanding manufacturer, and the Seattle MasterCraft dealership is the absolute best I have worked with...especially when it comes down to Customer Service and pricing for MasterCraft products. I had to get a new trailer for my boat, shipped to Hawaii...and the people at Seattle MasterCraft including Crystal, Adam, and Randy were professional, knowledgeable, attentive, responsive, and always willing to help in any way with my difficult order. And I received a great price on top of all that! I would absolutely recommend Seattle MasterCraft for anyone looking into any MasterCraft product, the best boat in the business.....for everyone on the West Coast and Hawaii.

John Bynum and the crew at NW Water Sports made purchasing a new Tige seamless! I really appreciate their attentiveness to my family and willingness to take us on multiple demos and show us the differences between every model. We ultimately went with a 24 RZX to suit our needs, but having a chance to try out multiple boats was awesome and allows us to feel confident in our purchase. Thanks again for all your help!

COMMUNICATION: It is nearly impossible to get a hold of anyone there. I would generally have to call 3-4 times before I could reach anyone. My boat was there for 18 days for a 4 hour job. Their ability to keep me informed on what was going on was the worst I have ever experienced from a business. I have emailed the owner twice in an attempt to resolve all of this, however, he has never returned any of my attempted communication so here I am writing this review. INTEGRITY: They told me that they would remove the prop shaft and check for cracks/runout. This never happened which resulted in a broken prop shaft on the very first outing after the "repair". They told me that one of the delays was a "stripped out bolt" on the prop shaft that they had to use a "special tool" to remove. After I got the boat back from them I found the stripped out set screw on the prop shaft seal they were likely speaking about...which they never removed...which means they never removed the prop shaft...which means it could have never been inspected as requested and promised would happen. WORKMANSHIP: They replaced all four motor/transmission mounts. This was completely unnecessary as they should have only replaced the rubber bushings. This resulted in an additional $600 charge. Even when Indmar replaced these under warranty they would only replace the bushing and not the entire mount. On the brand new mounts, three of the four lock/jam nuts were finger tight. One of them (as seen in the picture) was 3/4" away from even being tight. Three of the trunnion lock bolts were just more than finger tight and one was completely loose. All of this has the potential for the motor to come out of alignment and clearly was not done to any type of industry standard. They are listed as an Indmar certified repair facility, however, NONE of the work they did was done properly so that should probably be re-evaluated. They misaligned the motor resulting in a new prop shaft rubbing on the through hull tunnel. When I picked up my boat it was missing a bluetooth transom remote, missing a trailer coupler lock pin, the trailer coupler had been hit/scraped, the 7 pin wiring harness adaptor had been smashed and two tower speakers broken. Long story short, this is probably one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a dealership. Jonathan's communication is terrible, they clearly have lied about the work that was completed, the work that was done was not completed properly, and now the owner refuses to have any type of discussion about it. I was telling this story to an acquaintance three days ago and he explained that his friends boat is also at Northwest Watersports and he is experiencing the exact same thing. Run, don't walk, away from this dealership. Max, I am still willing to have a conversation if you ever wish to call or email me back! I sure hope that, as an owner of the dealership, you would want to correct the poor workmanship that some of your marine techs are doing.

I really want to express how much I was impressed by this dealership. The sales staff was very knowledgeable about the product. Friendly and eager to answer any questions without the high pressure sales. They seemed to enjoy the interactions and are confident in there product. Also had some warranty work completed there as well. Customer service in the service dept. was exceptional. No problem to big or to small. All I kept hearing was no problem we'll take care of it and they did. I also had them winterize and service the boat. Very professional. Everything was put back correctly with no grease smears on the interior. If your a boat owner you will know what I am talking about. I am very happy with the purchase of my new boat and will be enjoying it for years. I will definitely be taking it back to have the service and maintenance done on the boat. Thanks!
