Buying a boat from MarineMax Savannah in Thunderbolt, Georgia? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask MarineMax Savannah which models suit the waterways near Thunderbolt, Georgia.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at MarineMax Savannah.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like MarineMax Savannah will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. MarineMax Savannah should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

We purchased a used Sea Ray 350 SLX from Chet Porter early last summer. Chet was extremely helpful in the process .. .from the knowledge/history of the boat, to sharing all the functionality during the sea trial to the delivery. Jack Smith also supported us through the full purchase process to make the efforts easy on our end. We could not have asked for better support and service. We look forward to enjoying the boat for many years to come!
We spent $26,000 with this company not long ago. We have barely put three hours on the new motor that they replaced as well as another motor that was redone with all new hoses, etc.. There is a small leak and they took the boat in a month ago and now they are refusing to even look at the problem and they are telling us to take the boat back without fixing it. Who I thought was the head of service told me I’m sorry I should’ve called you a while ago, but we cannot work on your boat now because we’ve made too many new boat sales. I have never ever seen a situation like this in my entire life. I never leave bad reviews you can look at all of my reviews and you’ll see five stars across the board. I am in a state of shock right now over the lack of service with this company and the lack of loyalty. We have multiple boats. We are very pleased with many boat dealers. You will see that the major majority of my reviews are praising boat dealers. I am absolutely stunned.
It is strongly recommended that you do not buy or service a boat at Marine Max, Savannah. If I could give Zero stars, I would. In 2014 they sold me a new Sea Ray stern drive boat (inboard/outboard). I was new to the area and did not know at that time that almost everyone in the area had outboard engines because inboard/outboard engines had far more problems and limitations in a marine environment. So, instead of being honest and telling me to buy a boat with an outboard engine, they willingly sold me the stern drive boat. I have had the boat faithfully serviced every year at Marine Max as per the maintenance schedule (price of service has tripled in 11 years) and performed all routine service (engine flush, cleaning, etc.) every time I put the boat in the water. The boat has less than 140 hours on it and was in a rack at the marina and not kept in the water. Now there is an oil leak at the oil drain plug and dipstick attachment tube and they are refusing to work on it. They now say their "policy" is to "not work on any boats 10 years and older." However, when pressed, they admit that they just don't want to work on stern drive boats (I was told "a marine repair shop at one of the lakes would be better equipped to take care of the job"). I believe that a reputable company would not have sold me this boat in the first place and would have sent the boat (if it is unsuitable for use in salt water) to one of their lake side dealerships and advised me to get a boat with an outboard motor. However, having sold me the boat, they should now have the integrity to handle the repairs and perform the repairs at a reasonable cost. This is not the case. So, if you want a dealership that deals with you in a dishonest fashion, overcharges for the services they are willing to perform, and potentially won't perform the service that you need, by all means deal with Marine Max! Always treated poorly and very poor service Picked our boat up from it breaking down over the weekend. We thought everything was good being they were the last ones in the boat. Saw a mat fly out (for the 2nd time from picking the boat up from them) then saw that the seat wasn't even in place and the bottom wasn't even put on! You would think after purchasing a brand new boat from these people that the service and the attitudes would be allt different.
The crew at Marine Max Savannah were fantastic...Leo, Robbie, Nicole and George. Leo coordinated the replacement of our transducer for a depth finder. Robbie installed the transducer. George ordered the part, and Nicole made our docking arrangements. Everything worked perfectly and I couldn't recommend them more highly.
