Boat Buyer's Guide – MarineMax Lake Lanier

Buying a boat from MarineMax Lake Lanier in Cumming, Georgia? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.

  1. 1

Match the boat to your waters

Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask MarineMax Lake Lanier which models suit the waterways near Cumming, Georgia.

  2. 2

    Inspect the hull carefully

Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.

  3. 3

    Check engine hours

Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at MarineMax Lake Lanier.

  4. 4

    Request a sea trial

Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like MarineMax Lake Lanier will accommodate this request.

  5. 5

    Verify title and registration

Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. MarineMax Lake Lanier should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

I have been taking my boats to MarineMax since purchasing my first boat from them in 2018. The service team, led by Eric Richards, is outstanding. Over the years, they have assisted me with warranty issues on both my Boston Whaler 130SS and my Crest tritoon. When the boat cover on the Crest deteriorated after four years, they proactively worked with the manufacturer and arranged for a replacement cover to be fitted. I routinely bring my 13-foot Boston Whaler in for service, and I am treated with the same level of care and respect as if I had just purchased a 45-foot Sea Ray. MarineMax has also serviced boats I did not purchase from them, including my Ranger Tug and now my Cutwater. They never attempt to sell unnecessary repairs or services. Their mechanics are highly knowledgeable, take the time to answer questions, and provide practical advice on maintaining both the boats and engines. I trust them completely with my boats and would not take them anywhere else.

I've been servicing my boat with MarineMax for the past several years and their service and care is fantastic. No repairs or issues that aren't needed and I really appreciate that honesty. They covered my boat as soon as I took it off the hitch and I got extremely good communication and maintenance service. Special shout-out to Marc Perrone and the techs that worked diligently to get me back in the water quickly and hassle free.

MarineMax is the only place to buy a boat. Everyone there is knowledgeable and pleasant. They make your buying experience awesome. John Powell and Adam Emanuel specifically are the best in the business. John found me the perfect Sea Ray in the color and with all of the options that I wanted and Money Man Adam made the numbers work. Thanks again To John and Adam, my MarineMax Dream Team.

A few years ago at the boat show we put a deposit on a boat that was supposed to be the exact floor plan and model that was showcased but brand new still in the wrapper at the dealership. We finalized the numbers with Alex and the sales manager and met up at the dealership the following week. To our surprise we were shown the boat to be purchased… not the same floor plan and the boat was a demo sitting in the water, uncovered, already showing signs of initial wear… it wasn’t the boat for us, even with additional discounts. We built out the exact boat there that we wanted, in a few days we were to have a price, a week went by… no response, two weeks… nothing not even a phone call. We requested our deposit back, finally after a few weeks we received it back. Be careful at the boat show and just know this isn’t the first time I’ve posted this same review. I’m sure MarineMax pays good money to have the bad ones removed. But just beware. They’re very convincing…. Call Angie at Bay Marine they won’t be at the boat show, but they treat you right and take care of you in service too!

First of all I do not like doing this for I am in the sales business to but here we go, bought a 2015 230 SLX runabout boat about month and a half ago low hours I’ve put about five hours on the boat. I have not even run a tank of gas out of it. Service lights come on. They assured me when I bought the boat that it had been serviced, everything was good. Call my salesman he he ghosted me after finding out what I had to say won’t answer the phone won’t call me back finally got in touch with the service department. They said they’d look at it but they want me to pay $200 diagnostic fee before I can even bring my boat not to mention I paid 50,000 for the boat by a month and a half ago I really don’t know guys further to come thank you.
