Buying a boat from MarineMax Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask MarineMax Charleston which models suit the waterways near Charleston, South Carolina.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at MarineMax Charleston.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like MarineMax Charleston will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. MarineMax Charleston should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

MarineMax Charleston SC Review: Disappointing Experience with Part Quote and Pricing I recently had a frustrating experience with MarineMax regarding a quote for a replacement part for my boat. I reached out to their parts department to get a quote for a specific part, and after some back-and-forth, they provided me with a clear price that seemed reasonable. I agreed to move forward based on that quote, trusting that the cost would be as discussed. However, when it came time to complete the transaction, I was shocked to find that the final price was significantly higher than the original quote—nearly double what I was told! When I questioned the discrepancy, the staff offered vague explanations about “additional fees” and “updated pricing” but couldn’t provide a clear justification for the increase. It felt like a bait-and-switch tactic, and the lack of transparency . To make matters worse, the communication throughout the process was lackluster. It took multiple attempts to get the initial quote, and even then, the service team seemed disorganized and unprofessional. I had to follow up repeatedly to get updates, which added to the frustration. Overall, my experience with MarineMax was deeply disappointing. I expected better from a company with such a prominent reputation in the boating industry. If you’re considering working with them, I’d recommend getting any quotes in writing and confirming all costs upfront to avoid being blindsided like I was. I won’t be returning for future parts or services and will look for a more reliable and transparent provider. One star for poor communication and misleading pricing practices.
On my second boat purchase with MarineMax Charleston, the team there has helped me immensely. Even being in the marine business, MarineMax Charleston has helped me with all of the things I wouldn't be able to handle on my own. They make the purchasing process very easy and enjoyable, can't thank the team there enough for all they do!
I purchased my Scout 215XSF in the early stages of the pandemic (2021 model). I grew up boating and as a lifetime boater have owned several boats from runabouts to a 30' cruiser to this center console. The 215 XSF is my second Scout. It probably goes without saying that I have always been impressed with the quality of the brand! With MarineMax carrying the brand, and also being located close to the Scout Plant, I opted to purchase through the Charleston location. As with Scout boats, I was equally impressed with the level of "quality" that I received throughout the purchase process to the scheduled maintenance follow-up from the MarineMax team. From Karl Anderson (my sales Representative at the time) to the F & I Manager, to the Service Manager to the Delivery Captain (Matt Peebles, one of my favorites), the experience was a great one! I have serviced the boat at all required intervals with scheduled appointments and typically trailer it from Beaufort to Charleston for an early drop off and afternoon (same day) pick-up! The MarineMax App is awesome for this purpose and other updates! Congrats to the support crew! Bruce Hawkins
Collin in Sales was fantastic and very helpful in my recent search for the perfect Scout. He worked tirelessly and was a straight shooter during the entire process. I recommend him for any boat sale at Marine Max.
Larry Carson and Dotson Guice have been awesome with their customer service after the sale. They both are always available for questions and suggestions and very knowledgable of the product. Additionally, this MarineMax location adding Matt Peebles to be a liaison between customers and the service department has been a great addition. Matt is one of the most knowledgable I've met concerning the components of a Scout.
