Buying a boat from J&K Marine - Detroit Lakes in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask J&K Marine - Detroit Lakes which models suit the waterways near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at J&K Marine - Detroit Lakes.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like J&K Marine - Detroit Lakes will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. J&K Marine - Detroit Lakes should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

We bought a new pontoon in July 2023 and this is the first time we've ever purchased a boat. We did go to one other dealership before reaching out to J & K Marine in DL. After making a phone call to J & K Marine, the salesperson provided a wealth of information and details about the pontoon model we were interested in. We were grateful for the attentive customer service received by the sales person and the business office staff. The details provided allowed us to make better decisions on what model of pontoon would work into our lifestyle along with knowing 100% we would purchase from J & K Marine due to their exceptional customer service provided to us. We highly recommend J & K Marine to others.
I would like to give them fewer stars but I can't. I bought a boat from them, docks, etc, and they were great to deal with, but I have lost all confidence. Last year, they bent both shocks on my motor cover and said they would replace them. It took 4 phone calls and three months to get the shocks. A less than 20 item. This year, the boat was side swiped and damaged while being stored. I talked to them, and they promised to look it over and call me back... even saying it might be weather and an act of God. A week later, again, no call. I am not sure their service department understands the word "service". I will find someone else that carries Beach King and has actual service for boats.
bought 3 boats from them last one i had i took it in for storage 2 years ago they were going to service it and change the impeller got it in the spring wasnt pumping water took it back it was 6 weeks before I got it back. next fall i took it in for storage everything was working fine i got it in the spring got a code 11 dps module out. Called j&k said they didnt work on evenrudes anymore it was a etec took it to Pelican Rapids rapid marine he told me 2 weeks 6 weeks later still wasnt fixed charged me 840 I picked it up to central marine in carlos mn had it fixed in 2 days excellent service and very nice people
I've used J & K several times to both put in and remove my Beach King dock and older Newman pontoon lift. A year ago I went to another business for installation and removal because J & K was tied up on bigger lakes and had difficulty finding time to put my lake equipment in until June. This fall I went back to J & K for removal. I wasn't home when they came. They left my dock decking on the beach instead of stacking it on our lake deck (up a few stairs) and left a few cement blocks in the water. Maybe they forgot where I store them but they had been here several times before. Meeting customer expectations should be a priority. I know this wouldn't have happened if I had been home when they were at my place.
When I called Jim P to let him know we had lost our boat in the Tornado on Maple Lake by Alexandria MN, he was very helpful with information on trying to find a "new to us" boat. We told him what we were looking for and he had their salesman Wesley look through their inventory, but they didn't have any used deck boats in stock at the time. So, imagine our shock when Wesley reached out to us in January with news of J&K expecting a trade in for a deck boat! When we last spoke to Wesley, we thought for sure that would be the end of that and we would need to keep looking ourselves. When we got that call in January - we were shocked that he had actually wrote our name down and remembered to call us with the first option to purchase before anyone else! To say we were pleased with the service from J&K would be an understatement. Jim and Wesley were wonderful to work with and we appreciated the service & support we received. Thank you J&K!
