Welcome to Freedom Boat Club – Boating Made Simple® Freedom Boat Club was first founded in 1989 in Sarasota, FL. It is the oldest and largest boat club in the nation. The vision and purpose in establishing the boat club model was simple and straightforward - to deliver a hassle-free recreational boating experience for its members.
My wife and I have been FBC members for 2 yrs now. It is a pretty care free way to get on the water. Just recently we did a transfer from Southport to Wilmington/Carolina Beach for personal / convenience reasons. The transfer between clubs has been very easy and club owner John was engaged, clear and quick in his communications / directions to make it happen. We have done several reciprocals with the Carolina club one the 2 years and really enjoyed every one of them. Plenty of boat choices and availability, always in good shape and ready to roll when we get there with a great dock staff. As a plus, Carolina has great access to good cruises, beaches and restaurants. Looking forward to a more permanent access out of Carolina Beach.
As a former boat owner, I’ve been a member for eight months & I love it! Easy to make reservations, Super easy dockside pick up and return of clean, new boats. Dock staff is excellent. Captain Rob gave great free instruction on boat handling and safety. John in membership was great to work with, was honest and detailed on the agreements. I’ve used reciprocal Freedom boats in Florida as well. Highly recommend.
So happy to be working with Freedom Boat Club!! I've been wanting to for years but now that we bought a beach house in Surf City, NC, we are so excited to hit the water. John was my point of contact with Freedom Boat Club and his is AMAZING! Highly recommended!
Amazing experience and incredible communication with John of Wilm.FBC! He was readily available on a holiday weekend to text AND call and answer our questions! After owning 2 boats of our own, we decided to change things up since we don't really go out more than 1-2x per week and mostly in summer only. The ongoing upkeep and maintenance has run us ragged -- AND -- the biggest part is the "pick-up/load/unload/rinse-off" that eats at least 1-hour (if not more) of our time on boat outings. Additionally, what we encountered buying used boats to save money, well....it was great for the first 2-years to get to know the area/waterways with a smaller (16' & 19') boat, but now we are ready to expand & get MORE out of our experiences. We looked into the cost of dry-docking and honestly FBC is a NO-BRAINER! The complete LUXURY of a dry-dock experience with flexibility of boat types? It's insanely better than owning! Don't let the initial sign-up cost deter you, you'd spend so much more buying a boat; and this covers your insurance while out on the water.
John and his staff have been great to work with during the initial signing up for the club. All questions were answered in a timely manner and John really worked with me and my family to get us in the right program for what we wanted.

Buying a boat from Freedom Boat Club of Wilmington in Carolina Beach, North Carolina? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Freedom Boat Club of Wilmington which models suit the waterways near Carolina Beach, North Carolina.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Freedom Boat Club of Wilmington.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Freedom Boat Club of Wilmington will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Freedom Boat Club of Wilmington should be able to walk you through the paperwork.
