Boat Buyer's Guide – Dan's Southside Marine

Buying a boat from Dan's Southside Marine in Minneapolis, Minnesota? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.

  1. 1

Match the boat to your waters

Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Dan's Southside Marine which models suit the waterways near Minneapolis, Minnesota.

  2. 2

    Inspect the hull carefully

Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.

  3. 3

    Check engine hours

Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Dan's Southside Marine.

  4. 4

    Request a sea trial

Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Dan's Southside Marine will accommodate this request.

  5. 5

    Verify title and registration

Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Dan's Southside Marine should be able to walk you through the paperwork.

Been a year since I bought my pontoon from them and before I bought it my back panel had some sort of rub on it. They waited to tell me the day before I came to pick it up but also told me they would order a replacement to fix it. This was a brand new pontoon hold over. I texted the salesman pat multiple times then was told the parts guy would let me know. Haven't heard a word from them but they had time to send cookies. Wouldn't deal with them again on anything and have told multiple people that had been looking for a new boat/pontoon whats happend.

I've had our used bass boat in 2x and they did great, but the 3rd time I talked to parts for help in adjusting new ratchet cover at courtesy and Tim said yes,I had explained I needed new TM mounted, courtesy light was blown bulb and to rewire batteries to 24v. Tech broke covers off the bow light and didn't say anything took light out, charged me 100$ for adjusting cover, actually tied strap in knot was it. Charged another 100$ +38$ for light it's been 2 months and no light, had to buy new outlet for navigation light replacement, they did install free but was told that now can't get replacement courtesy light and say their gift card machine is down and can't give me 1, but when wife called about getting a card they told her to come in no problem. Now 2 months later and still being told same thing from service. I'm out 238+ for nothing on extreme lowest SSDI amount that took 3yrs of saving for this.

After blowing my 20 year old motor a couple years ago I decided to either fix it for $5500 or price out getting a new motor. They were fair as far as the repair goes as I had a small marine shop quote the same price. I ended up buying a 2017 Suzuki 150 four stroke! I thought the pricing was fair and they made it quick and easy. I filled out a credit app online they called me and gave the best rate Suzuki finance offered. I brought it in on Monday 6/5/17 and it was done on Wednesday. So I went in on Thursday and they had me in and out in less than a 1/2 hour. The delivery was short and sweet but explained the important things to do. I would highly recommend my friends and family to Dan's Southside Marine. Thanks for getting me back on the water after a couple years!

If looking to contact Dan the owner don’t bother, I sold my boat and was trying to transfer the warranty to the new owner and was told by the sales and service dept. That Dan is the only one that could do it, so I called left a message no call back called again each day over the next 4 days, each time I called the sales staff said he was there but not once. Did he return a phone call and when I questioned the salesman regarding him calling me back, he gave me some lame. Excuse that he’s busy with some new system they put in so I guess customer service is low on his priority list. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS DEALER

Dropped my son's boat off and they said they would give us an estimate to fix the fly wheel (specified no cost) and then we could decide what to do. When my husband got there they wanted to charge him $200 for taking the boat apart! We already knew what the issue was and they explicitly said there would be no charge to look! If they had to do something more invasive they should have called us before rather than tell us it was a free estimate and then charge us when we picked it up so we could decide what to do! The manager brought the cost down to $100 but we will not ever return. It isn't about the money but the trust, if you are going to charge don't say it was free up front! We will not return, will take our business elsewhere! This was a small fishing boat but we are looking at getting a family boat so they are very short sited with the lack of service!!!
