Buying a boat from Chesdin Boat Sales in Petersburg, Virginia? Use this guide to evaluate any listing before you commit.
Match the boat to your waters
Pontoons and deck boats suit calm lakes. Deep-V hulls handle chop on larger lakes and coastal water. Center consoles are versatile for fishing. Ask Chesdin Boat Sales which models suit the waterways near Petersburg, Virginia.
Inspect the hull carefully
Look for stress cracks, blistering, or repairs on fiberglass hulls. Check the transom for soft spots by pressing firmly — a solid transom feels rigid. Osmotic blistering costs thousands to repair.
Check engine hours
Inboard and outboard engines are typically rated to 1,500–3,000 hours. Low-hour engines with service records are worth more. Ask to see oil change and winterization records for any boat at Chesdin Boat Sales.
Request a sea trial
Test the boat on the water before buying. Run it at full throttle. Listen for unusual noises. Check that the throttle and steering respond smoothly. Reputable dealers like Chesdin Boat Sales will accommodate this request.
Verify title and registration
Ask for the current title and confirm the hull identification number (HIN) matches. Check for any liens with your state boating agency. Chesdin Boat Sales should be able to walk you through the paperwork.
Marine financing has unique terms. Here is what to know before financing a boat through Chesdin Boat Sales in Petersburg, Virginia.
Typical Loan Terms
10 to 20 years for larger boats. Smaller boats are typically financed over 5 to 10 years.
Down Payment
10% to 20% is standard. Some lenders require more for older vessels.
Pro Tip
Get pre-approved by your bank before visiting Chesdin Boat Sales — it gives you a rate to compare against dealer financing.
Marine lenders (USAA, SunTrust, Essex Credit) specialize in boat loans and often offer better rates than general banks. Get a pre-approval before visiting Chesdin Boat Sales to compare against dealer-arranged financing.

UPDATE (Feb 10, 2026) Scott went out of his way to make a last minute change request for an upgraded engine selection. Can't say enough about the super response and ease of working with the good people at Chesdin Boat Sales! Original Review: I met Andrew, Jacob & Scott (in that order!) at the Fredericksburg Boat Show January 9th. Before leaving, I'd signed a purchase order for one of the boats on the floor. My conversation with Jacob and how he takes so much pride in his work really pushed the needle for me to go ahead with a purchase - - - with confidence that service after the sale would be outstanding. The next day I went back, and decided to order one with different color options. Everyone was fantastic and made the process so much fun. Can't wait to take delivery in April and spend time on the water with these professionals!!
Customer service at Chesdin Boat Sales is terrible. Scott Wilson refused to complete any of my warranty work I needed. When I called he told me my issues were my problem. Scott Wilson is a terrible person and hope you don’t ever have to do business with him.
Scott and his crew are phenomenal. I have bought 3 pontoon boats from them and always felt like I got a better than fair deal. Their customer service is awesome.
Scott and his staff were amazing! My wife and I highly recommend Chesdin Boat Sales!! Thanks for all the help!!!
From meeting Scott at Chesdin Boat Sales at different boat shows, he took the time to provide a great overview to us as new prospective pontoon buyers. He was great throughout the purchase and delivery process as well as follow ups with a minor seat repair. We’re very happy to have chosen our Avalon and to do business with Scott and Chesdin Boats.
