ATV Buyer's Guide – Central Maine Powersports

Shopping for an ATV or side-by-side at Central Maine Powersports in Lewiston, ME? Use this guide to evaluate any unit.

1. 1

Match the unit to your terrain

Sport ATVs handle tight trails. Utility ATVs pull loads and work ranches. Side-by-sides carry passengers and gear. Ask Central Maine Powersports which models are best suited to your riding terrain and intended use.

2. 2

Inspect the CV boots and axles

Torn CV boots allow grease to escape and dirt to enter — leading to expensive joint failure. Look for grease slung around the boot area or cracked rubber. This is the most common wear item on ATVs and side-by-sides.

3. 3

Check the A-arms and ball joints

Grab the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and try to rock it — any play suggests worn ball joints or tie-rod ends. These are safety-critical and should be addressed before riding.

4. 4

   Inspect tires and wheel bearings

Off-road tires are expensive. Check for cracking, sidewall damage, and remaining tread. Spin each wheel and listen for rumbling — a sign of worn wheel bearings.

5. 5

   Test all accessories and electronics

Test the winch, plow mount, lighting, and any digital dash features. Electronic throttle bodies and fuel injection systems are harder to diagnose on the lot. Ask Central Maine Powersports to demo any accessories included in the sale.
