    Car Buying Checklist

Buying a car is one of the largest financial decisions most people make, and the pressure of a dealership environment or private sale can cause buyers to skip important steps. This checklist covers everything to verify before committing — from the vehicle history report through the test drive and the final paperwork review — so you don't discover problems after the deal is done.

    Before the Test Drive

Pull the vehicle history report (Carfax or AutoCheck) using the VIN before anything else. Check for accident history, title issues (salvage, flood, lemon law buyback), odometer discrepancy flags, and service history. For used cars, verify the reported mileage against the odometer — they should match exactly. One odometer flag is a serious red flag. Research the specific make/model/year for known issues: NHTSA recall database (nhtsa.gov), Car Complaints (carcomplaints.com), and Consumer Reports reliability history reveal whether this vehicle has a problematic powertrain, transmission, electrical system, or rust-prone body. Knowing the known issues before you drive prevents being talked out of concerns you were right to have.

    The Test Drive and Inspection

Test drive on a highway section (to test acceleration, highway vibration, and cruise control) and on local roads (to test steering, braking, and ride quality at lower speeds). Listen for unusual sounds: clunking over bumps (struts or ball joints), grinding during braking (worn pads or rotors), whining at speed (wheel bearing), or ticking at idle (valve train or timing chain issues). Physical inspection: check all four tires for wear pattern (uneven wear indicates alignment or suspension issues), look under the car for fluid drips or puddles on the ground, inspect the engine bay for visible corrosion, cracked hoses, or evidence of DIY repairs. Bring a flashlight. Check every electronic feature in the car — windows, mirrors, sunroof, heated seats, navigation, backup camera. Discovered-after-purchase electronics failures are the most common complaint in used car transactions.

    Pre-Purchase Inspection and Paperwork

For any used car over $10,000 or with high mileage, a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by an independent mechanic — not affiliated with the selling dealer — costs $100–$200 and can reveal thousands in deferred maintenance or hidden damage. The best mechanics to use for PPIs are the brand's independent specialists — an independent BMW specialist for a BMW, an independent Toyota mechanic for a Toyota. They know the specific failure points. On the paperwork: verify that the advertised price matches all line items in the purchase agreement before signing. Watch for add-on fees: documentation fees ($150–$500, reasonable), dealer prep charges (negotiable), dealer-installed accessories you didn't request (alarm systems, window tinting — these can add $500–$2,000 to the deal). Do not sign any financing paperwork without reading the APR, loan term, and total finance charge. Get everything that was promised verbally in writing before signing.

    Ready to Get Started?

The buyers who get the best outcomes in car purchases are the ones who treat it as a process, not an event. Take the time to do the research, pull the vehicle history, complete a proper test drive, and if in doubt, get a PPI. The few hours spent doing this properly are almost always worth it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What should I always check before buying a used car?
Always: pull Carfax or AutoCheck, check NHTSA recall database for outstanding recalls, do a thorough test drive including highway speeds, inspect visually under the car and in the engine bay, and ask for all service records. For any car over $10,000, budget for an independent pre-purchase inspection.
