Buckeye Lake originally was as a bog known to the local Indians as Buffalo Swamp. It was a low-lying recess in the terrain of wetlands and became a focus of early engineers of the Ohio-Erie Canal builders as a place to allow for water retention that could feed the canal system. It was determined that with some creative placement of levees and dams that this area could serve miles of canals. As expected, the swamp transformed into a wonderful retention lake that would help to develop the Central Ohio region with much-needed access to products and supplies for local businesses through continual barge traffic up and down the canals.
